Do we have definite info if 406 was built at Ryton or not?? Googling gives mixed results - wiki's 406 page says yes but its Ryton page says no. Several other references found, but all fairly passive with no direct statements. This 406 forum thread on build codes includes Ryton as one of the listed site codes, but all the folk who added comments and have British-sounding names seem to have Sochaux builds. This one's even more confusing from Coventry Live - "Production line workers at the Peugeot factory at Ryton are seen here celebrating the Car of the year award for the Peugeot 406 which is built at the factory. 27th November 1987" although maybe just a typo for what looks like a 405 in the picture and makes sense in 1987. |

Fairly sure they weren't, just the 309, 405, some 306 and the 206. It's also a VX/Opel-style minefield on most of those models - some UK market cars were built elsewhere and some UK cars were exported so without a VIN we wouldn't know for sure. |

Hansard, 28 March 2000 Lord McIntosh of Haringey "My Lords, I entirely agree that the health of the motor industry is quite essential to the steel industry. I acknowledge the difficulties with BMW at Longbridge. However, we still have Land Rover at Solihull, the Peugeot 406 at Ryton, the R75 at Cowley and the Jaguar S-type at Castle Bromwich...." If you can't trust Parliament ..... (am trying very hard not to make a joke about His Lordship being a car anorak ...) |
