RAC check (power by the DVLA) site reveals:

Vehicle Details for C345PHG:

Make VAUXHALL
Year of manufacture 1985
Model CAVALIER COMMANDER
Engine size(CC) 1598

I've never heard of a "Commander" trim level for Vauxhalls.

This is exactly what I'm talking about when I say a lot of 80s cars look awful now, although this one is not in good condition at all, thankfully this rotten old thing has been off the road since 1996 (according to the DVLA).

This silver metalics also quickly ages in an ugly way (and not imoportant of what make the car is).

Even in mint condition this car would still look ugly, very dated design (especially that big plastic grate-like grille). My dad's silver Vauxhall Omega is 11 years old (same age this car was when this film was made), but it looks nowhere near as bad as this, even though it's not quite in showroom condition. Of course being a more modern car it doesn't succumb to rust like many cars from the 80s did.

I don't know what I would think about it in the 1981 when the Cavalier/Ascona was introduced (I was in this year '-3' y.o.), but I remember the times when the car was still produced and I've never liked it.
I agree about the Omega it had very modern look in the 1990's and today isn't so out of date.

You're the same age as me. To me it does feel like a long time ago since most cars on the road looked like this. Some designs are classic, some just date, some were never pretty to begin with. About the Omega, it does look slightly dated now (it's aged better than older Vauxhalls though), or rather it's not as big and impressive as it once seemed. Recently my dad rented some cars including a brand new Astra and Vectra. Standing next to the Omega on the driveway, they seemed almost the same size, whereas the old Vectra and Astra were noticeably smaller than the Omega. And these new Vauxhalls had huge shiny headlights and big grilles with much thicker V's than the Omega's, new cars today are looking increasingly aggressive-looking.

The Cavalier Commander was a kind of fake 1.6 Ltd edition SRi-alike, a bit like the Golf Match is a fake Golf GTi. It had 'COMMANDER' written in red italic sans serif type on the rear bootlid. All generally C-reg. Class.

So it's one of those tacky "limited edition" trim versions? They all sucked.

@G-MANN. Unfotunately I can't tell about today's cars design that newer=better. Most of new models are for me uglier than their predecessors (example - Volvo S80). Sad, because I very liked the 'fashion' of the late 1990's and beginning of this decade, the lines were clear and not so 'heavy' (another example MB CLS).

I agree with G-MANN that this is nothing more than a tacky old banger.

I don't believe that either, some new cars aren't as handsome as their predecessors, I said cars are getting more agressive-looking (and OTT), not better looking.

Vauxhall sold 807.624 Cavalier Mk2 from 1981 to 1988, there are only 6.000 left on the roads of Britain. They used to rust very easily. Not to mention it was very steal.

It looked very contemporary in its day and even Top Gear liked it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFzMTSfFPGs It took the lead of the repmobile market from the ageing Ford Cortina. Second best selling car in the UK in 1984 and 1985, until it was superseded by the Ford Sierra in 1986 but Vauxhall regained the lead in 1989 with the Cavalier Mk3.

Don't worry the new 2009 astra has much softer lines, they won't be aggressive looking for much longer!

Well, I like much more the MkI Cavalier (built between 1975 and 1981) but I think the MkII is much better than the MkIII.
