Am sure I've seen those Anglia-esque rear fins before on a proper production car, but can't remember what or whether UK, NZ or Aus.

Some of the footage used in "McLaren" is from a short NZ film called: "New Zealand Grand Prix (1961)"

(The car appears at 0:46)
https://www.nzonscreen.com/title/new-zealand-grand-prix-1961

Apperently this was at Dunedin's 'Round the Town' race in 1961. And I'm fairly sure, these are the records of the participants and their cars from this exact race which I've found from this page under the name Dunedin Festival Races 1961 more of the programme..., because drivers C. Bennet and I. Bennet driving 2 Morgan's are on that list (they are mentioned in kegare's link ) and #14 Buckler M.G. and #6 Mistral Sports (as it says on that list) can be seen on this entry which is from that exact race.

Question now remains, which #racenumber this white sports car has on that list to identify it.

Edit: I think it's #12
[Image: number12.jpg]

Which on that list, the only #12 white sports car is Sabre driven by B. N. Walker. Could that be it? I can't seem to find anything about Sabre sports car on the internet, though (unless it's related to Reliant Sabre).

I've run out of steam on this one. I still think I've seen it or similar somewhere but can't connect a name. Maybe I'm thinking of the GSM Delta/Dart, built in ZA, similar shape but not a useful match.

The (Reliant) Sabre story is messy. Basically Autocars(Israel) commissioned Reliant to develop a fibreglass sportscar for sale in Israel; Reliant grabbed the rights to an existing rebody kit for Ford Populars - the Ashley 1172 - and designed a production package, as well as building the first 144 cars before assembly switched to Israel - see Sabra Sport page.

Reliant then used the Sabra as the basis of their own Sabre 4 (convertible) and subsequent revamped Sabre Six (coupe), but the 1961 film date would be very tight and the pictures don't look the same - some similarities, but not enough. However it's possible that Reliant may have tried something parallel of their own as maybe a bigger model which happened to be called Sabre - they were trying lots of different ideas at the time. But I've nothing to support this, so at the moment am thinking any Reliant connection is a dead end.

Which seems to leave us with a possibly NZ (or Aus)-build something-called-Sabre with 2400cc.

Pic says 2480cc for the 'Sabre'. Doesn't match Reliant or Sabra's 1703cc at the time (pre-62).

Edit: the closest I found so far is Jaguar's 2483cc used in several cars.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaguar_XK6_engine#2.4-litre

What else is this engine size that this car could be powered by?

There's also a mention of two Swallow Doretti prototypes called 'Sabre' on Wikipedia but doesn't sound like a lead: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swallow_Doretti#Design and the engine size wouldn't match.

Also another 'Sabre' here is the Almquist Sabre: Link to "www.autopaper.com" but the bodies don't match our car.

2580cc Aston Martin DB2, unlikely. Also in Lagonda 2.6 litre.
2660cc Austin A90 Atlantic.
2548cc Daimler SP250, or the saloon.
2553cc various big Fords.
2495cc Mk IV Zephyr 6.
2443cc Big 4 Riley engine used in Healey cars.
2655cc Humber Super Snipe 1.
2483cc Jaguar 2.4 litre.
2458cc Lancia Flaminia
2451cc Lancia Aurelia
2496cc Lea Francis 18hp engine.
2490cc Opel Commodore.
2639cc Rover 90 etc.
2498cc Triumph 2.5
2651cc Vauxhall Cresta.

Engines of approximately similar size to that mention above.

Is the car possibly an Elva Courier Mk3 Coupé?

Its not the Elva Courier and although its extremely similar to the Reliant Sabre in design its not based on a modified Sabre body shell (which I first assumed it was).

The bonnet is similar to the Sabre's but longer, however the rear shut line is some 4"-6" lower, the windscreen is shallower and the roof less crowned. All details that seem to say its from different moulds.

I suggest if all likely sources have been eliminated, since we have an identification of sorts, we call it a Sabre Special and if a firm identification is found in the future we can re-locate it.
