well, every large Opel becomes very fast and very heavily a cheap clunker.
This hasn't changed since the 30ies until nowadays.

If I may say so Mike, you have one word wrong in your post. “Premium”. Opel, like Vauxhall never built a premium car. They built expensive luxury cars, but never received the appreciation of a Merc S or a BMW 7.

First owner, middle ranking executive.
Second owner “wannabe”.
Third owner, window cleaner.
Fourth owner, scrapyard.

@jfs: naah, not really - the top Opel/Vauxhall cars weren't expensive as new cars, compared with the premium brands as Benz or BMW.
Audi made its way into the premium range over long years (in the 70ies Audi was a teacher's car), but Opel never reached it.

Compared with the price of a baseline Kadett, the top model Opel was expensive. OK not comparable with a Benz or BMW, but still a lot of money for the ordinary bloke. Once they became used, they became cheap because of the running costs.

The 3.3 litre Cresta PC here would run forever until the rust got it, with its unburstable Bedford truck engine, but who wanted 15mpg?

The Opel Kapitän was the car of the middle class business owner, who became wealthy in the

but who didn't reach the top.
A black Opel Kapitän with trailer coupling was a "butcher's car", so a bit for selfmade men without a high school education. The real upperclass in West Germany drove Mercedes - and for those Opel was a chav's car.
