This scene was an reenactment of the murder of widowed father and Commerce Police Constable; William "Cal" Campbell who was shot by the Barrow Gang on the New State Road near Commerce, Oklahoma on the morning on the 6th April 1934. In original case, after the murders of Texas Highway Patrol Officers; Murphy and Wheeler, Barrow, Parker and Methvin had fled to Texarkana on the Arkansas side of the Texas-Arkansas State Border where they were spotted, they then fled across the Red River into Oklahoma. After crossing into Oklahoma, the Barrow Gang's Ford got stuck in mud, they then attempted to flag down a passing motorist at gunpoint who then accelerated to safety and notified the local police at Commerce. Upon receiving the report from the motorist, Constable Campbell and the Commerce Police Chief; Percy Boyd, drove out to the spot where the Barrow Gang's car was, resulting in The Barrow Gang shooting at Chief Boyd and Constable Campbell. Campbell was hit in the heart and was killed while Boyd was hit in the head and was wounded and was forced to surrender, the Barrow Gang then took Chief Boyd hostage and forced a passing truck driver to pushed their vehicle out of the mud and told the truck driver to warn any police officers that they would kill Chief Boyd if they didn't backed off and drove away. The Barrow Gang drove across Oklahoma into Kansas where they dumped their vehicle and got into a black Pontiac sedan and let Chief Boyd go with a clean shirt and a few dollars. As he got out of the vehicle, Bonnie Parker told Boyd that she "didn't smoke cigars". -- Last edit: 2020-09-30 10:48:09 |
