Another photo of HFM 43 found here Footage may be 1955. HFM 43 was Chester, March 1947 to Jan 1948. BLotW lists as Beadle C Series "Bd OB 75440 , B28F , 11/1947 , Crosville S17". So a genuine original Beadle, or one of their mash-ups of something older?? -- Last edit: 2019-03-10 18:28:19 |

^ Neither. Crosville bought 68 Bedford OBs from 1946 to 1953. They were all either Beadle bodied, (21 in number - HFM 28 to HFM 45 and KFM 437/8/9) or Duple bodied (the rest), this one is from towards the end of the first batch of Bedford chassis bodied by Beadle, by the appearance specified for bus work rather than coaching. What you may be thinking of is a Beadle chassisless bus, in basis, a self supporting body upon or underneath of which were attached various mechanical units from a selection of manufacturers, either newly bought or recycled from older vehicles. These were full fronted, with the engine inside the vehicle beside the driver. The name Beadle preceded the name of the mechanical unit manufacturer in bus enthusiast useage, I don’t know what went in the log book, hence “Bedford Beadle” as above or “Beadle Bedford” when Bedford units were hung on the Beadle bodywork. This is a Bedford OB/Beadle. -- Last edit: 2019-03-09 10:05:22 |

How we should describe a Beadle chassisless bus with the steering and suspension from a Bedford OB, back axle and gearbox from a Leyland Cub, and a Gardner 4LK providing the power, or lack of it, beggars belief. |

An article by Michael Dryhurst in Classic Bus of April/May 2014 entitled “Bedford-Beadle and Beadle-Bedford” has a picture of Eastern National Fleet No 187, described as a 1947 Bedford OB with a Perkins P6 engine and Beadle B30F (bus, 30 seats, front entrance) body. Hants and Dorset also had seven, including JEL 580. Aside from minor details of sidelights and destination indicators the buses are an exact match for the subject in discussion. Further pictures show two Beadle-Bedfords belonging to Eastern Counties, of similar design to the bus shown in my link above. Eastern Counties also had some vaguely similar, but half cab buses built by ECW to the same system but no Beadle involvement. Further care in identification is needed, however, because Beadle built bodies looking somewhat similar to the chassisless vehicles, but which were normal coachwork on conventional chassis. -- Last edit: 2019-03-09 13:31:08 |
