A Bedford S-type Hose Carrier would have been with a county fire brigade (or other regional authority) not the National Fire Service. "After the war, the NFS continued while discussion were held over the structure of Britain's fire services before eventually being disbanded in 1948." Bedfordshire (not Bedford) Fire Brigade was re-created in 1947 after the disbanding of the National Fire Service. More information found NYR 947 was originally a 1953 Bedford SHZ water tender with a 'Windover' body originally (possibly spelling error for Wendover as the location of MoD units in Oxfordshire). Similar NYR 824 here https://ccmv.aecsouthall.co.uk/p885293724/h3a804b72#h3c68631f showing what it probably originally looked like as an AFS vehicle serving in a Civil Defence role until it was disbanded in 1968. After this it was possibly held in reserve, like a lot of other Civil Defence vehicles, until sold in 1976. -- Last edit: 2019-10-03 14:44:49 |
