Six window saloon, unusual... |

I have been into the books, unfortunately to no great effect. Six light saloons were made by Hooper, James Young and HJM at the least. Looking at the wheels this may be a late Silver Dawn or Silver Wraith, and the coachwork could be JY or HJM, but I have not been able to find an exact match. It could also be an SC1, so I have now hedged all my bets, and the farm remains safe, if mortgaged. |

It looks older-than-Cloud design to me - tall sides and shallow windows, plus wide wing flourishes. But as jfs says, Cloud era wheels. so my hunch would be mid-late 50s Silver Dawn or Silver Wraith when they were still lingering on in production because no-one could be bothered to pull the plug. No idea on coachbuilder, but the cabin is almost Daimler-ish. |

My particular reason for thinking it’s pre-Cloud is the height of the radiator shoulders above the top of the front wings. All we need is a view of the front! Much as I dislike arguments(!) I have to say that Royces were well aware of the antiquity of the early post war designs, but being engineer led, never rushed into anything. There were various issues at that time, the automatic transmission was still being evaluated, although it had been in production for a while, since it was not intended to offer a manual option on the Cloud range of cars. Also whether or not the V8 was ready and quiet enough was still in the balance. In fact the SC cars went nearly 4 years with the essentially 1920s designed and 1938 re-engineered straight six under their bonnets, stretched to its limit. Further, a coachbuilt car could take up to a year from receipt of the chassis by the coachbuilder until delivery of the finished car, making the availability dates of the cars somewhat flexible. Searchers after further knowledge are recommended to “The History of a Dimension” by S H Grylls MA, Technical Director, explaining how Royces developed its 53bhp engine of 1919 into the unit that powered the Bentley Continental, at the time the world’s faster luxury 4 seater. -- Last edit: 2018-12-25 09:34:07 |

Definitely not a Cloud, those are Dawn/Wraith type air intake grilles. |
