One thing I'm sure of, it's not the Turnpike Cruiser. |

Hard to tell if it's a 4-door sedan or hardtop. My guess is Monterey. |

My guess would be a Montclair or a Monterey |

I believe its a Montclair 4dr Hardtop, B pillar area is too narrow to be a sedan. It may even be a Phaeton Sedan link even though its a hardtop. comments?? -- Last edit: 2007-07-19 06:18:50 |

If a closer view of the doors helps, I can provide a capture |

Doesn't the presence of vent windows in the rear dors exclude the possibility of a hardtop sedan? |

And I think it is a Turmpike Cruiser, since I seem to be able to spot the 'antenna' pods at the leading edge of the roof. |

Thanks for the extra pictures, antp. We can now see that it is a 4-door sedan rather than a hardtop. This eliminates the Turnpike Cruiser as the sedan was a hardtop-only model. However, both the Montclair and Monterey had a 4-door sedan in their line-ups. |

I already eliminated the Turnpike Cruiser, because of the lack of an inward-slanted rear window. |

Right, but junkman thought it was. |

The strangest thing is that the car has rear door vent-windows. Officialy, no 1958 Mercury sedan had those |

Another clue. Mercury side trim for 1958 was a bit erratic. The lower molding consisted of a double stainless molding around a (not always) constrasting color inlay. from the factory pictures I have, that color inlay extended all the bay back only in Montclairs and Turnpike Cruisers, but not in the Montereys and Park Lanes. In those the moldings were reunited on the rear door in a single stainless spear. That's what we have here. There was no 4 door sedan in the Park Lane serie. So this should make the car a Monterey. As for the rear vent window, I have an early factory picture of a Medalist model with rear vent windows. Maybe there were early models who still had them. I see no other expalanation. 1958 Mercury Monterey 4 door sedan ? |

The car was almost 30 years old but looks brandnew. Maybe they made a mistake during restauration of the car... Assuming it's a 58 Monterey (and that soundsconvincing), the chassis code will be [58A]. |
