More of a snigger than a giggle. I’ve always looked at the Californian as a bad joke, a sort of cynical cash cow aimed at the twits of this world. At least its successor, the Rapier, was given a decent engine with a few extra horsepower and was provided with a sporty interior to match the coupé coachwork. |

Was the Californian any worse than its contemporaries?? Cheap Americana glamour in an austere period when roads were still primitive with no motorways and 50 mph was probably a dizzy thrill, so antiquated engines were not a problem. Californian sold well in UK and abroad, so must have hit some of the right buttons. As for "a sort of cynical cash cow aimed at the twits of this world", 'twas ever thus - look at what we get today from all the prestige German manufacturers, JLR, Porsche, Ferrari, Aston Martin and so on - some good stuff at the bottom of their respective trees, vastly overshadowed by pointless but highly profitable niche variations/crossovers which dazzle the gullible. |
