Bit of research on Bryan Hartnell's VW... 4U2040 is the correct Oregon license plate, the real car had VIN 8641212113, described in the police report as a white 2dr coupe in "fair" condition with all tires as "poor": Link to "www.zodiackillerfacts.com" Crime scene pictures: http://www.zodiackillerfacts.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=41 The movie car: |

This scene was the reenactment of the murder of Cecelia Ann Shepard and the attempt murder of her boyfriend, Bryan Hartnell who were both stabbed by the Zodiac at Lake Berryessa in Napa County, California on the evening of the 27th September 1969. Hartnell survived of his wounds but Shepard lapsed into a coma and later died of her wounds on the 29th September 1969. In his statement to the Napa County Sheriff Office, Hartnell stated that he and Shepard were picnicking at the lake when he spotted the killer approaching them from the treeline, holding a .45 caliber semiautomatic pistol on the both of them. With the gun held on them, Hartwell said that their attacker wanted their car and cash to escape to Mexico because he said was a escaped convict from a "prison in a two-worded town" in either Colorado or Montana who had already killed a prison guard and the car he already stole after his escape was "too hot to drive". After bounding Hartnell and Shepard's hands with rope, the killer produced a knife and stabbed them both multiple times, Hartnell was stabbed six times and Shepard was stabbed ten times. Hartnell described the killer as a white male, around 5'11, weighting about 170lbs with a combed back brown greasy hair, he also described him wearing a black executioner's type hood with clip on sunglasses over the eyeholes and black bib with a 3" x 3" circle and cross on the bib. After stabbing Hartnell and Shepard, the killer hiked up to Knox Road, about 500 yards from the scene where Hartnell's car was parked and wrote the dates and locations of his previous attacks on the driver's side door of the car and included the location and date of his latest attack with the words, "By Knife". About 70 minutes after the attacks, at 7:40 PM, the killer placed a call to the Napa County Sheriff's Office and reported the attacks, the call was traced to a payphone at a local car wash on Main Street in Napa, about 27 miles from Lake Berryessa and a few blocks from the Sheriff's Office. Radio news reporter, Patrick Stanley was listening to his police scanner when he overheard Napa Police Officer David Slate putting out broadcast about the call, after driving around, Stanley spotted the payphone. -- Last edit: 2022-02-28 15:27:06 |
