Anyone know the filming location (not stated on IMDb)? It does not look like the National Science Museum in South Kensington to me, the most obvious choice.

edit. From the listing for Rover 'JET1' it actually is located at the National Science Museum in South Kensington.

It appears to be this exhibit.

Aveling 5nhp (nominal horsepower) 'Steam Sapper' No.5
http://www.irsociety.co.uk/Archives/12/traction_engines_as_locos_2.htm

It was no. 830 of 1872 for the School of Military Engineering at Brompton (now known as Old Brompton), Gillingham, Kent, and from our illustration it appears to have been supplied as a convertible road to rail locomotive.

I guess for 1872 this must be the oldest vehicle to be listed on IMCDb?

Actually it is even a year older: 1871

It must be this exhibit:
http://www.makingthemodernworld.org.uk/icons_of_invention/technology/1820-1880/IC.055/
Sadly all the important information is missing, except that it is an Aveling & Porter.

The statement in the linked text that it is the oldest surviving engine is not correct. A Fowler Ploughing Engine from 1870 is actually in working condition and is a regular visitor at the Great Dorset Steam Fair.

Thanks for your help Sunbar & Alexander ;)

Note for antp:- Would it be possible to add the year of vehicle (not just year of film) on the search engine?
I think this would be useful for many people not interested in the film, but just searching for a certain car from a certain year.

Here is another (somewhat blurred) picture of the engine standing on the same spot in the museum stating that it is from 1871:
http://www.norcimo.com/gallery/d/3413-2/SciMus29.jpg

I did find another link saying that it is from 1870 (http://www.ranger.demon.co.uk/aveling/aveling.htm) but I think this is not correct.

Anyhow this engine therefore is not the No.5 Steam Sapper, but an earlier engine. 5 n.h.p. is likely but Works No. will be somewhere around 600, I guess.

Steve, I think you have to pay the museum a visit to find out all the details. :)

----------

Antoine, I joint Steve in wishing for an age related search.
There is still the old idea of sorting the vehicles into age classes:
* Ancestor - 31. December 1904
* Veteran - 31. December 1918
* Vintage - 31. December 1930
* Post Vintage - 31. December 1945
* Post War - 31. December 1960
* 60s - 31. December 1970
* 70s - 31. December 1980
* 80s - 31. December 1990
* 90s - 31. December 2000
* Modern - everything since
(see old discussion here: /movie_62803-Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang.html)

I would also like a country related search. It is getting quite difficult to re-discover a car already listed if you don't know the name details. If one could search for e.g. "van, 60s, Italy" or "sedan, vintage, France" it would help a lot.

Certainly a visit to the Science Museum would be interesting to see if the engine itself can be identified more accurately. However the data the website gives is probably no more accurate than any shown on the exhibit, unless the actual engine number can be seen.
Another picture of the same engine on the Science Museum's site refers to "Aveling and Porter steam traction engine, 1873". So the dates are not consistent even for the museum!

Just a couple of random points so far without reaching any conclusion.

Regarding the "earliest surviving engine" I think the distinction maybe between 'Traction Engine' (road engine) and 'Ploughing engine' (agricultural engine). The Science Museum refers to the earlist Traction engine.

From the link to "A Steam Dinosaur" http://www.ranger.demon.co.uk/aveling/aveling.htm

"Today, the oldest known road engine is the Science Museum's 1870 Aveling & Porter traction engine, which was presented to the Museum by the Road Locomotive Society in 1950."

Note the reference is "the oldest Traction Engine" and the earlier Fowler was a "Ploughing Engine"

Regarding "Steam Sappers" - Military Traction Engines...

From the Royal Engineers Museum site, http://www.remuseum.org.uk/corpshistory/rem_corps_part8.htm

"Mechanical transport (Steam Sappers) - 1868-1902

In 1868 the Royal Engineers purchased the first of a series of steam traction engines. The first one was obtained from Aveling & Porter of Rochester, Kent and described as 'Steam Sapper No. 1'. Steam Sapper No. 2 was purchased in 1871 and used to such good effect on manœvres that a further 5 were ordered, two of them, driven by sappers, for pulling heavy guns at Shoeburyness." Therefore 1873 for Sapper No. 5 is a possibility I would say.

Sure, it is on my to-do list (entering a range of two years)
Country can be included in criteria, but it is not yet in the interface. You have to add "&origin=" + the 2-letter country code in uppercase at the end of the search result address; e.g. brazilian coupés :
/search.php?resultsStyle=asList&makeMatch=2&make=&modelMatch=1&model=&modelInclModel=on&modelInclChassis=on&class2=2&origin=BR

Yes, and I have visited the museum a number of times, but I have no plans to be in central London soon.
