According to IMDB, Toyota built 3 brand new AE86 for the movie. In the movie plot there are only two different ones. The main one: And this one: -- Last edit: 2008-12-26 23:10:50 |

Before I clicked this picture I thought it was missing the Japanese characters on the door. -- Last edit: 2006-06-28 03:23:38 |

Read an article about them a few years back. They were popular shortly after they stopped making in the late 80’s early 90’s with kids in Japan as they where a tuners dream. Unlike the Honda civics they where rear wheel drive which was quite unusual for a compact passenger car by then. They where also very light and supposedly handled well. One of the designers was a former racing driver who later ran the Toyota motor sport division. |

According to the trivia section of IMDb there were three cars made for the film by Toyota. http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0439630/trivia This would mean the date of production is probably 2004 or early 2005, depending on how long filming and editing took. |

Comments? I would rather list it as a 2004/2005 Toyota Sprinter Trueno [AE86] Re-Made for Movie. |

I wonder whether Toyota really built new cars from scratch or just restored them very thoroughly. I've seen the term "built" used in reference to customising a car for a film: /vehicle_132735-Ford-Mustang-1969.html |

That's what I said above Production date yes, but not especially model-year As we have e.g. 2004 model produced in 2003, why not a 1983 model produced in 2004 ? Same with protoypes which often carry the year+2 rather than the usual year+1 of models. |

Uups, never noticed! Another reason why I dislike model years and rather have production dates. |

Well it is the opposite IMHO: the important info in the identification is the model, year is an additional info to the name for cars which changed between first and last model. The fact that it was produced more recently should not change much the visual result... |

I saw one of these today, although it was dark grey rather than white. At least, I think it was the same model - it had Trueno badges on the side but not the front. |
