In fact Volvo are as difficult as any other make and possibly some because of several reasons; partly because of different model names on different markets which has little or nothing in common and partly bacause all the changes that has taken place during the years (Volvo has, or at least use to have, ÄT (Ändringstillfällen (=ENG: Times of change)) 10 times every year which gives plenty of differences in a period of 19 years (1975-93). I began collecting brouchures in the late 70's, which I continued until about the year 2000 when many car companies lost their independence and it became less interesting, and when finally got my driving licence, aged 18 in 1989, and got my first cars, I couldn't afford to leave them to be repaired at garages but tried to do it myself. As also spare parts were expensive ,that meant many opportunities to compare models at car demolition plants. Volvo spent loads of money for the 1978 MY 240-series upgrade, but the journalists (with some right!) said that it looked just the same as it did the previous years. Because of that, Volvo introduced the square shaped headlights otherwise fitted to the 260-series, for the 1979 MY. That is square on the DL and rectangular on the GL and upwards. MY 1980 looked much the same as 1979 with a few exceptions; the wheels got bigger ventilation holes, the side badge (hidden behind the blokes calves!) said VOLVO instead of the model name, and the rear badge got a different look. Also the door mirrors got a rectangular shape instead of round, but were still black. Other versions were 244 GLE (E = Bosch CI Fuel injection) and GLT with usually black bumpers. I cannot see if this is a 1979 or 1980 model, but most likely a GL (as default).
