Pardon my language, but why would they allow cars from the imperialist bastards in North Korea?

They have no problems with Western cars and other Western goods. The Northkoreans even have a big faible for things, "Made in Germany" - so they smuggle it into the country, usually as diplomatic luggage via the embassy in Berlin (often you can see 20ft-containers in the backyard). Surprisingly you can find a plenty of German stuff there, from Bahlsen-cookies up to BMW X5.
I've tried to make pics of it (not allowed it was in the "German shop" in the Koryo Hotel)
https://imageshack.com/my/images/127 (and the pages before and after, also more pics among others on the following pages)

I was fascinated about the plenty of Western cars and other stuff and asked, how it came into the country. As it's not legal, they told me some stories, far away from the truth. About the German food and beverages (in every hotel and tourist shop they have German beer and German gherkins, cookies and so on) my guide told me, that the German embassy would collect orders from other foreign embassies and would order every few months a container at home. The stuff, which wasn't distributed among the embassies, would be given to the Northkoreans.
In the train from Pyongyang to Beijing there was a girl, working at the German embassy in the next compartment - and she told us, that that this story is bullshit.

The story about the origin of the US-cars was not less absurd. On my question if they came from Okinawa -until some years ago there was a ferry between Wonsan and Niigata in process
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man_Gyong_Bong_92
the guide denied strictly "No way! Never!" Then he told me, that the cars came from Thailand, shipped to Northkorea via the Chinese port of Dalian ("there are sitting distributors" - so smugglers...)
This was bullshit either, because the cars, I've meant were clearly US-spec and some models, as a VW Routan, were never sold outside the USA. Here I've spotted even a dealer's sticker from St.Cloud/MN: https://imageshack.com/i/myimg25141j
Plus the fact, that in Thailand there is left traffic so the cars are RHD.

But I haven't continued to talk about it. It's senseless to make problems, if you force the guides to talk about taboos. Ever DPRK-traveler has to know, that there are strict and less strict taboos. About the less strict taboos you may talk later on, when you could have a good rapport to the guides. It depends a lot on yourself, on your behaviour and your sensibility.

P.S. We had no chance at all to visit a private market. We tried several times to convince the guide, to let us on the legendary Tongil-market, but it was not possible. I've also trid to visit the large supermarket in the diplomatic quarter of Pyongyang, but no chance either. But here there arte some photos of it:

P.S.II The Northkoreans told me: "Unfortunately our currency is shit. If we would get real money, we all will travel to Germany for going shopping!"

Yes, they hated the Chinese Jettas and wanted "real" VWs and BMWs and Audis. I just read your comment on that today.
