Year: 1968 Make: MG Model: MGB Colour: White Body Style: Saloon Plate: MG6370 Engine No: 18GBUH80056 Chassis: 4906 Vehicle Type: Passenger Car/Van Seats: 5 CC rating: 1,798cc Fuel Type: Petrol Assembly Type: Unknown Country of Origin: Not known NZ First Registration: 17-Jan-1968 Was Registered Overseas? Yes - some strange info, but a 1968 MG with 1798cc only fits a B .... has reversing lights so date fits. UK build or Aus import possible - maybe a recent Aus import might explain the wobbly data?? 2 red ones including a rubber bumper |

This is an odd one. Carjam says the plate was effective from 1968 but the M plates only started in the mid 1980s. -- Last edit: 2017-03-18 01:04:38 |

More on this one. Up until the introduction of personalised plates in the 1990s you could order any plate you wanted as long as it was something about to be issued. In the mid 1980s someone put a hold on all of the MG plates and made them available to MG Car Club members. I knew several club members who took advantage of the offer. It would seem that in the case of many of these plate changes records were not kept of the previous plate. The same is true of a car which I purchased in 1977 and still own. It had two different plates previous to the one I acquired for it in 1979 but the carjam record shows it as having had only one plate. What this all goes to say is that there is no way of being sure just when this car was first registered in NZ. |
