The one going over the cliff doesn't match the "hero" car - it has no windshield, no mirrors, and no rim in the spare - plus it has doors and rounded rear fenders that the Schwimmwagen in the first four thumbnails does not have. Any guesses as to what it was? Different model Schwimmwagen, modified Kubelwagen or ?

Could be a modification by a previous owner, to make it more useful on the road? Doors for easy access, rear fenders to keep stones from flying everywhere...

The rest looks like a real 166 chassis, but with engine, gearbox, driveshafts and more removed. Probably just a worthless old wreck by then.

I think so, too. Maybe it's the same car, but just wrecked before the final boom. And yes, in the early 50ies Kübelwagen had no value at all. As any other pre-war-car, too. They all were just old clunkers, used, until the people had enough of the new D-Mark to buy new vehicles. In the times of the West German "Wirtschaftswunder" (since the introducing of the D-Mark in 1948 until the first wee economy crisis in the 60ies) everyone wanted to be modern, having the newest fashionable stuff and of course forget the previous bad times.
Fot that reason there was no interest in any older stuff at all.
