I think it's a very well drawn Anglia E494A - 2 probable clues - the semaphore indicators and the angled flap vent on bonnet side, which I think was vertical on Popular 103E. But I haven't got these definitely pinned down.

There are two types of ventilator, the fixed and the openable. As far as I can see both types were fitted to both the Anglia and the Popular. The most certain way of deciding between the two is the windscreen wipers, which were fitted below the screen working upwards on Anglias, and a single wiper as standard, working downwards from above on the Popular. There is also the headlights, the Anglia having larger diameter than the tiny, feeble lights of the Pop.

I think I read somewhere that the vents changed during the Popular production run, when bodywork was switched from Dagenham to Briggs at Doncaster, possibly about 1956/57. But have lost the reference so unable to check if I've got it the right way round. Didn't think of the wipers here, but they look bottom of screen so Anglia-ish.

1937 7Y, fixed vents.

1937 7W, fixed vents.

I cannot find a picture of any car or van variant with the opening vent that was made before 1948. Why the Popular returned to the old style vents is a mystery, perhaps the tooling for the opening vent wore out, or maybe the fixed type was cheaper.

For those who wonder about my credentials for making a posting about Ford Populars.

HEA 531 was early 1953 so a few months before Oct 53+ Popular. And it has Anglia wipers.

HEA 632 was a Prefect E493A belonging to the father of the bloke who firstly took the picture above, and who was later the best man at our wedding in 1974.
