Here is quote from www.stlouisdumptrucks.com/convoy9-04b_001.htm

Model: 1977 Mack RS786LST

Engine: Mack ETAY676 283 hp "Tip Turbine" turbocharged inline 6 cylinder diesel

Transmission: Fuller RT9510 10 Speed Roadranger

Wheelbase: 220" Center of Front Axle to Center of Tandems

Sleeper: 60" stand-up sleeper by Able Body Company w/right side exhaust cut-out

Suspension: Mack 38,000# Camelback

Rear Axles: Mack 38,000#

Wheels: "budd" style 10R22 tube-type black painted steel w/2 hand holes.

"This truck was "new" when filming began. It was provided thru a Mack Dealer new Albuquerque, NM, and was custom fitted with a bull bar and high-set fifth wheel to accommodate the Fruehauf Tank Trailer. This truck was used for most of the "still" shots and on-highway scenes in the movie. The truck's condition was altered and battle scarred for scenes shot early on which represented a later timeframe in the story board. This unit was damaged in the collision with the stalled patrol car outside of Albuquerque and in some re-filming of the damage to the Alvarez Jail. The final film sequence for this unit was the approach to the bridge scene and SOME of the frontal gunshot hits. This unit survived production and was rumored to be in a vehicle museum."

RS700L just more "general" designation, and 1973 means,that it's post-1972 model

One thing for sure that Mack trucks makes engines for there own but on this movie RD's truck engine sounds like what appears to be a Detroit 8V71 2 stroke V8 diesel.

A detroit 2 stroke V8 diesel on a mack is wierd but now because of this movie it makes it an instant classic.

Gotta love those detroit 2 stroke diesel engines because they know how to rumble specially the V8s.

Since the goblin truck Comment page from Maximum Overdrive is closed for the moment then let me tell everybody on that page that the truck is indeed a Western Star because the shape of the cab and the location and position of the head lights and its got a either an 8V71 or an 8V92 but i'm confident that is an 8V92 because it sounds a lot louder than RD's truck on Convoy.

This primary truck was a 1977 Mack RS712LST, VIN 35492. Although the RS786LST and the RS712LST's were identical, the RS712's had California certification on the ETAZ673 tip turbine engines. This truck was custom-built for EMI Films, but ownership was retained by Mack Trucks. After filming, the truck was shipped back to the Hayward California factory and rebuilt due to extensive damage from crashes and bullets. It was rebuilt and sold to a gentleman in Los Angeles where the truck spent its life as a transfer dump.

There were 3 other RS700L's used - a 1973 (VIN 13182) that was gutted and used as a pull-along prop for on-highway dialogue scenes and two identical 1970's. One of the 1970's was gutted and used to send off the bridge (VIN 6648) and the other (VIN 6646) was the second unit on-highway double that wound up being converted into a cement mixer. It was wrecked in 1986, bought and rebuilt in 2007 and remarried to the surviving original trailer in 2008.

We have the entire original paperwork trail from the studio on these vehicles that we acquired when we purchased the truck and trailer in 2007.

Convoyduel,I so envy You,I love that truck! (My heart still sinks when it gets shot up and goes off the bridge at the end of the movie, even after all these years and knowing that it was a stunt truck that was used).I have seen Your clips on Youtube and have two questions,1st,have You got the bullbars fitted yet as it just doesn't seem right without them and 2nd,do You have the original bonnet mascot with the "fur feathers" down the back or the replica that seems to come without the "fur feathers".I have checked out Your web site and was so glad You managed to get the original tanker trailer and restore it.Hope You enjoy the truck as much as I would have done given the chance

Actually to tell you the truth The Western Star Goblin Truck Had a 3408 Cat if you look when it's on it's way to the Boat Dock right before it get's blown up you can see under the fender and I saw a Yellow Block that means the truck would have a cat engine

That's the original version of the writer C.W. McCall... Maybe it's little hard to come by, but you can download this song and then you will hear the song made for the movie, where it says 'Bulldog Mack with the can on back'..

Just an update....We now also own this original 1st Unit Mack RS712LST, VIN RS712LST35492 in addition to the 2nd unit RS731LST truck. We've removed the dump body and will be working to restore the truck over time.

Typical Hollywood. Personally, I'll take the sound of a tip-turbine Mack engine over the sound of a Detroit any day..... Those engines could put on quite a show when they were in a hard pull with both the turbo and tip turbine going flat out.

Yes there were 5 trucks in the movie. Not all are lost or in a museum. The company I currently am employed by, owns the truck and trailer from the jail scene. We regularly show it, with a show coming up the 16th of July in Plainville, Ga. The truck currently resides at our shop in Rome, Ga. We have left all of the movie battle scars on the unit other than routine maintenance to maintain its road worthiness.

The Mack lost its right headlight later on.
@ChazSter You're 100% right, that'd be much better.
@luke1818 Alas, the times of old trucks still getting produced, are gone... :(

I worked for Mack Truck in Hayward when the trucks for the movie were made. Mack Truck's in Hayward built a significant number of custom trucks. We built trucks with any combination of engines, transmissions, and rear ends that a customer wanted. We would use Maxidyne, Thermodyne, Detroit Diesel, Cummins, what ever the customer wanted. The only trucks with gold bulldogs on the doors had to have a Maxidyne engine, all trucks without a Maxidyne engine had silver bull dogs on the doors. On the Pig Pen site I shared what trucks we made for the movie which did include an RS700 dummy for the Rubber Duck.

As Convoyduel had stated up above the truck in the main picture is the 1977 Mack RS 712 LST as he does own the truck

I think that there was four Mack's used as Rubber Duck's truck in the film and than as a 5th Truck a glider kit was also used for filming where the hood was removed numerous of times in between scene's

Dan Bruno (Owner of one of the trucks used) actually went and created a modern take on this truck in 2019. It sold recently for 229,000 dollars. Custom built by Western Star using a glider kit. Only about 7000 miles were on it when it sold. R.D. Trucking is actually trademarked, who knew.
