@dsl: You were there back then, so may I just ask please whether the strong presence of old VWs in this movie is plausible? Were old VWs/ Beetles still common in the UK in the late 80s? I'm just curious as I once read that the only European country where the Beetle never really sold well was France and I'm just not sure whether this is correct or not. |

It's stretching things a bit - I've still got a couple more to post - but not totally bananas. In 1990 Manchester and Merseyside (and most of Britain north of London) had huge deprivation problems after 10 years of economic and social devastation by Empress Margaret so people focussed on cheap and cheerful stuff for boy-racers, classics, etc with VWs, Minis, 2CVs and old Escorts etc all prime targets for rescuing from scrappies and so on. My scientific evidence to prove this is that it was about the time when a lot of new monthly enthusiasts magazines were launched for these economy classics (eg VolksWorld, MiniWorld, Classic Ford, Fast Ford etc. Surprisingly there was no attempt to do Imp World or Classic Arrow, but I'll move quickly on... ) Most of these are still going strong today and easily found in most newsagents/supermarkets etc and these niches are still well supported. Try googling something like "VW owner club Manchester" and it throws up several different clubs across NW England. So VWs have been treasured by their followers, even when times are hard. You could start a whole sociological research project into whether these people also have beards, stainless steel vacuum flasks, drink real ale, and wear sandals and hand-knitted jumpers today...... |

I never noticed any economic deprivation in that period, and this is well north of London, property prices remained fairly stable, none of my cohort was without a job, and those industries which closed in this area seemed to redeploy their staff without visible misery on the streets. Social deprivation is a self inflicted disease not one brought on by politics, and there was very little attempt by the next government to put right any of the things that had been messed up previously. The current political choices offered still seem to be between fools on one side and idiots on the other, nothing changes. In 1990 I was driving a 1989 Vauxhall Astra SXI Estate car, G653 FOC, which was quite a bit better than the Escort 1.6 Ghia, D579 EUE, it replaced. The Astra met its end buried in the side of an Escort Mk2 driven out of a side road straight into my path. It was replaced by a Cavalier 1.7L Turbodiesel, K942 AUX, which was a bit slower, but a lot more frugal on fuel. -- Last edit: 2016-03-04 11:06:05 |
