Are you sure that the first thumb shows the same car as the other captures?

The reason for asking is that it otherwise is a prime example of a very rare car indeed, in this case a 1980 Volvo 242 GT.
As far as I know, they all had the round headlight from the 1978 240 MY as of http://momentcar.com/images/volvo-242gt-1980-2.jpg , a grille in silver and with a pair of rectangular additional lights incorporated in the grill, and not the rectangular 240 GL 1979-80 headlights.
If the same car, I believe it's not original, but a custom job.

242 GT was sold in Aus and NZ 1978-81 - http://www.volvoadventures.com/242GTspec.html . Seems likely that some Aus-spec cars also arrived in HK - we have other non-Volvo similar situations - as they shared basic production requirements like RHD and it makes sense to exploit different opportunities to make batch production viable (given that the biggest obvious RHD opportunity - UK - never took any 242s).

Apart from noting that none of the various 242 GT pictures found on google searching for pictures has the rectangular lights, is there any reason why the 242 GT would not receive the 79+ lights as a normal production update??

Plate is Oct 86 - which in HK may or may not be reliable for dating the car - so another idea is that it's a revived limited edition to build on the success of the 1985-86 242 Turbo Group A racer which - for instance won the 1986 Macau GP - /vehicle_871364-Volvo-240-Turbo-242-1985.html . No evidence that they did this, but it might have happened??

If the plate dates as late as Oct 86, could it be an import from - let's say - Australia?
If the front belongs to the same car, I believe it has at some point been involved in an accident. Not unlikely as at least some of them were driven rather hard, albeit not as fast as a Group A Racer...
If having been involved in a crash, the availability of spare parts might not have been great in a remote corner of the world, far away from Gothenburg. Hence a different front, I believe.

I have a neighbour who had a 1979 242 GT for a while, and that gave ample opportunity to study it. As far as I understand, it had several features that differed it compare with any 242, and one such feature was the spare wheel arches near the mud flaps. As a sports car, and thus a lightweight it shouldn't have to cary a spare wheel all the time. Instead it had a aerosol rubber compound can which was to be used in case of a flat tyre, and hence the spare wheel arches were flat. That can was not a huge success as the tyre became near impossible to repair afterwards because (I believe) the liquid rubber dissolved the rubber inside the tyre and prevented the normal rubber saussage to be used for a hole.
Please compare a normal 240/260 http://forumbilder.se/DBSVG/100-1540 with a 242 GT http://car-from-uk.com/ebay/carphotos/full/ebay141415609161626.jpg .

I was offered to buy the GT when my neighbour was to sell it, but I thought it too rusty at the time and would need too much work.

I've entered it as 242 GT so that it doesn't sink out of sight and can be retrieved easily if new info found. A big problem with HK plates is that the dates - probably - only apply to the last time the car was sold. As far as I can tell a new registration is issued for each sale. So if 1st owner sells, the 2nd owner has to get a new plate. Therefore this Volvo is only 86 if it's still with 1st owner who bought it from the showroom. Otherwise it's older.

1980+ because of the door mirrors and boot script.
