Is this an actual retired LAPD squad car, or just a civilian model done up to look like one?

Regardless, I'm disgusted at its destruction. I can't even look anymore. Hollywood wrecked most of these throughout the 80s. There are virtually none left anywhere. No excuse to kill such a rare car in 2015. Absolutely unacceptable.

I agree. What pisses me off is that this appears to be real stuntwork, yet they use CGI for the destruction of common modern cars.

@cko...They made slightly over 20,000 4-door sedans...I would not consider that rare...As to why none are seen these days is open to speculation, but 4-door sedans are not usually saved once their usefulness is gone..Junked and recycled is usually their fate, which is a shame because I prefer 4-doors over 2...They are much more useful...

Ah! A kindred soul. I prefer 4-doors too.
Not only are they "more useful", I like the balanced, symmetrical lines of a sedan. They have a solid look.

Actually 20,000 isn't a lot. And being the most-wrecked car on tv/movies helped eliminate them pretty quickly.

They actually made 30K in 1977 (almost evenly split between base Monaco and Monaco Brougham) and 23K in 1978 (18K base and 7K Brougham). Plymouth Furies were more popular with 42K made in 1977 and 40K made in 1978.

@night cub....Our figures disagree again :( 20633 Monacos and 17244 Monaco Broughams in 1977 which is almost 38K total...
20292 Monacos and 8665 Monaco Broughams in 1978 which is almost 30K

Plymouth Fury 25172 sedans and 25617 Salon sedans in 1977 which equals @50K..
In 1978 Fury 83649 sedans and 14964 Salon sedans which is @98K units

My numbers came from the "Standard Catalog of American Cars 1976-1986". To add to more confusion, I checked numbers with the "Ward's Auto Yearbook" and they list for Production by Body Style:

1977 Monaco 4dr - 35,407 (under Production by Series lists Police 4-dr - 4,976)
1978 Monaco 4dr - 28,964 (not broken down for 1978)

1977 Fury 4dr - 50,020 (Prod by Series, Police 4dr - 7,411)
1978 Fury 4dr - 48,613

the production company might have sourced a rusted out B-body from a salvage yard 4 the stunt vehicle
