Because these were marketed as BMW Isetta I have labelled this one such but I see that the rest on this site are simply Isettas. I think they are BMWs because they use the BMW 250cc four stroke engine. As far as I know the original Italian Isetta has a two stroke scooter engine. Maybe it was ISO's own engine??

Update - yes it was ISO's engine - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isetta - the story of BMW's connection is there too.

Seems UK-built cars were sold as Isetta without BMW. There was a first batch of BMW-built - /vehicles_make-BMW_model-Isetta+300.html - with badges and/or fake grilles on the door before UK assembly started. I think the UK factory was what used to be Trojan, and then became the McLaren factory - so bubble-cars to F1 in less than 10 years????

On the first picture I put up, showing a UK made car, you can see both the Isetta script and the BMW crest on the door. The Wikepedia article states that BMW "made the Isetta its own so much so that none of the parts between a BMW Isetta Moto Coupe and an Iso Isetta are interchangeable". I imagine that's why the British company got it's licence from BMW and not Iso.

On the second set of photographs, that of a 1960 UK made car, you can see, again, both the BMW emblem and the Isetta name. One of the photos in the set shows the ID plaque that states "Manufactured by Isetta of Great Britain Ltd. under license from BMW".

Re dsl's comment re Trojan. I also thought there was a connection but I think Trojan made Heinkels about the same time and had no Isetta connection. I could be wrong though.

Ooops - correction accepted. Trojan assembled Heinkels as you say and had no Isetta activity. They bought Elva in 1962, which led to the McLaren link.
