Rolls Royce Silver Spirit

G-MANN UK

No, it's a Bentley. :p Licence plate is below the bumper so it's an earlier model - 1982-85 Mulsanne Turbo.

Supcoach, please don't try to identify cars unless you really know what it is or what else it could be. Otherwise admins could end up entering the wrong thing.

The Rolls Royce part was already there when I put in Silver Spirit. Whomever put the pic up misidentified to begin with and realized their error and corrected it to a Bentley. So don't put your opinion in unless you know the circumstances...

Didn't G-Mann correct it? You've got to be more gentlemanlike with your mistakes.

supcoach US

2014-05-20 01:23

Yes he corrected it but he's accusing me of misidentifying it when it was misidentified to begin with. I saw RR and put in Silver Spirit which if it had been a RR instead of a Bentley would have been correct. Like I said don't accuse if you don't know all the facts. (As Johnnie Cochran said, "if the glove doesn't fit, you must acquit". There have been several vehicles that have been misidentified by whomever put it up and I brought the error to their attn-I don't see what gmann's problem is. And while I am on a tirade why did it take him almost 6 months to give official id to a vehicle that I identified correctly 6 months ago... /vehicle.php?id=649756 Everybody makes mistakes, but in the case in question I am getting blamed for something that was not my fault to begin with....

The problem is you confirmed it and it could get entered by one of the admins, that's all.

Thank you All I was trying to say is that whomever originally posted the pic did so as a Rolls and going upon that id I said that it was a Silver Spirit. G-MANN implied that the whole error was my fault when in fact the error originated with whomever posted the pic and id'd it as a Rolls...

No, you don't try and give identifications it unless you really know what things are. OK, it was already falsely entered as a Rolls but either you don't know a Rolls from a Bentley or you didn't really look at it properly because the grille is a dead giveaway.

You could have at least put a question mark on the end of your comment if you weren't sure, but even then I think wild guess comments are a waste of space unless something's been up for a little while and no one's said anything.

No offence, but it's got to the point where I ignore your identifications when I look through unknown cars because I feel it's likely you're wrong.

It is true that 1980-85 Rolls-Royce Silver Spirits/Bentley Mulsannes had the numberplate underneath the bumper, maybe US-spec ones had the plate on the bumper but that's probably because 80s US market European cars had to have special bumpers for their regulations.

In response - I usually do put a question mark if I am unsure and if proven right (as in the case of the Corniche) I will sometimes remove it. Yes I know the difference between a Rolls and a Bentley (if one can see the front end) and yes I did not look closely enough. Your loss with regards to my identifications. I would say that my accuracy rate is at least 70% if you are not too snobbish to look at all my ids.
And with regards to wasting space -you do a lot of that when you post extra pic on a vehicle that has already been identified /vehicle.php?id=42498. I may not be as expert on cars as thee but I do know American school buses and to some extent transit and city buses..

If it was a Rolls it could also be a Silver Spur, which was the long wheelbase version (though here it can be seen that this is not an LWB model - there were LWB Bentleys as well)

Don't buy a Cloud or equivalent unless you can afford a good one and afford to maintain it. You are looking at 10,000 GBP at least for a six cylinder engine rebuild, say 15,000 for a V-8, 1,000 a corner to sort the suspension, up to 10,000 for a re-trim, and the sky is the limit on the sheet metal. By the way the chassis also rots out, and I know you don't care about fuel costs in the USA, but 10 to 14 miles per gallon is about right. They don't all have aircon or power steering either, and the curved glass isn't cheap. If you choose a coachbuilt car rather than the Standard Steel Saloon you will have more expensive fun finding out where the parts came from.

Multiply by 1.6 to get the dollar equivalent.

As an additional point, these cars will still run well when in absolutely worn out condition. You might be surprised by the silence of a test drive, but the state of the oily bits when still running can be amazing. My six cylinder engine had no top rings on the back two pistons when I took it apart, but it was still running quietly when the head gasket went which caused me to strip it down. The oil pump was almost in shreds but still did 20 pounds hot and the crankshaft vibration damper had fallen apart. Once warmed up it still ran well although using a lot of oil.

@johnfromStaffs:  for the informative an important tipps :)
As written here: /vehicle.php?id=704294 I'm becoming mad enough, to think about purchasing a Roller. I'm a bit hooked on, since I recognized the RR-prices: Link to "www.autotrader.co.uk" As it seems, it may possible to purchase a usable RR for less than 10 big bills :wow:
Due our many SCO-trips I know since years, still before my Vauxhall Vectra-deal in 7/2011, that in the UK used cars and classic vehicles are much cheaper than in Continental Europe. O.K., since our hardcore-picking-K 70ies-up-incidents in 1999 and 2000 I also know, that rust is a much bigger problem there :/ , but last but not least especially GB-made cars are definitely cheaper there than here.

So all the Rollers for four-digit-prices at autotrader.co.uk are dubious clunkers?

G-MANN UK

2014-05-20 20:00

The cheapest ones must be the 1980s Silver Spirits.

Ingo DE

2014-05-20 20:06

...which would be interesting for German buyers, because all cars aged 30 years and more you can register with a "H-plate" for historic cars, which means you save a lot of tax and insurance especially with big tankers. And you don't have to bother any more about the (totally idiotical, useless and shitty  ) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low-emission_zone#Europe

P.S. About the question: "Rolls Royce or disguised Bentley": maybe the owner had my own preferences: would like to have a rolls-Royce, but hates leather seats and prefer cloth/velour seats - which are (as it seems) available only for Bentleys. ;)

Never, ever refer to a Royce as a Roller.

Sub £10k Spirits and Mulsannes are a disaster looking for somewhere to occur, take a look at what Flying Spares http://www.flyingspares.com/dismantling.html are scrapping off as beyond economic repair and you will see. Also, beware the engine management systems in the cars so fitted, once they fail you are in big trouble, spares are drying up, and they will be costly enough to take the car off the road.

If you are ordering a new car from either maker and you want polythene bag seats they will do it.

But please don't negotiate a not unimportant topic: the general availiability of spare parts. Finally for a Rolls or a Bentley you can and will get EVERYTHING -and that quite quickly- I don't mention the costs, just the availiablity. If that is important four you, a Rolls would be a very good recommondation.
I'm playing around since nearly 25 years with a car without ANY availability of ANY bits. We K 70-freaks are absolutely and extremely on our own. Outside our cellars and garages there's abolutely NOTHING NOS-ish available, neverwhere - also since 25 years.
Although this may sounds overstated, it's the truth - and we aren't the only specialized freaks with that problem.

Well, I'm used t handle these problems since many years, they can cause also fun and are a good way to make like-minded friends all over the world - but it can becoming very annoying, too. Very often you feel anxious "Huh, shall I make that long ride? When I would have an accident or a breakdown, it will be over with riding this car" :wow: or you are really pissed: when you are digging and fighting without success for neccessary parts for years
Yes, I'm not the only "exotic-owner", who sometimes think: "Why the fuck am I not a Mercedes-, Porsche or Rolls Royce-owner? Then I would just walk to the dealership and just buy the fucking junk of parts and don't have to be pissed with that availability-drama"

Not for all Royces and Bentleys now, the Bentley pre 1955 spares are sold off to Jack Barclay, and Flying Spares are making new editions of old parts. My car is now 61 years old, I have owned it for thirty years, and have been working on it for most of that time.

G-MANN wrote But K70 parts, although rare, must be quite cheap, am I right?

Yes, often they are. Which is -no kidding- caused by the behaviour of us K 70-freaks
a) we tell the offerers "If you wont accept our price, you can stick the stuff over there, where the sun never shines. Because we are the one any only customers for that bits. If we don't buy it, noone will do that.
b) especially in the 90ies, when sometimes some NOS-items popped up somewhere, we always acted like "Ohh, a K 70 is a poor man's car, no reputation, no value, no wealthy owners, so your help for surviving would be very appreciated"
The RO 80-freaks had been so stupid to act in a total different way. They always had yelled loudmouthy, what a hyperrare precious item they have, what an outstanding piece of technology and disign-artwork. A car, much more sophisticated than a Benz, Jaguar or Rolls.
Which was
a) a lie. A RO 80 was never a high-priced rarity, cars are cheap to buy. And because many people thought, that it is someting special, they kept and stored quite a lot of RO 80ies, even helpless rotted wrecks.
b) unbelievable moronic *faceplam* - because with that they have pushed the spare-part-prices into space [:kiki]
