This boot handle was also used on the earlier B16 Amazon's. I think it was from 1959 MY. I know for a fact I had it on my first car, a 1960 MY (fog blue), and I distincly remember I thought it looked like an aeroplane. The boot handle was replaced as late as in 1964 by a much simpler one. Also, but I might be mistaken on this, the red rear lights is also an indication of a B16 Amazon as they got incorporated orange indicators for better visability (from others) and white reverse lights also for better visability (for the driver), from the B18 introduction. I had a class mate who had a 1962 two door black Amazon with the newer rear lights and I didn't on my 1960. |

Yes, I have a 1962 two-door with the airplane boot handle and 12 Volt three piece taillights. |

My point is that this Amazon cannot be said to be specifically a 1961 MY, but anywhere between 1959 and 1961, as the boot handle was introduced in 1959 and the trisect rear lights was introduced in 1962 on Swedish models (which this one is) and in 1963 on all markets. http://www.volvoamazonpictures.se/modelyears/modelyears.php . |

I think one tone colors where available from 1961 only. |

No, two tone paint were made to special orders for extra charge. Please have a look on this page http://usaautoworld.com/volvo/volvo-history/P1200/p1200.html where on top you can see how the P1200 originally was marketed (with two tone paint) and on the bottom how cars were ordered (three of them in solid paint). When one, very rarely, see a B16 Amazon today, it's usually painted in a two tone colour, but that's because restorers thinks it looks better. My 1960 Amazon was painted in (a single) fog blue colour. I'm often amazed, or rather surprized, how todays (european) older car meetings shows a wrong picture, with cars in brash colours, compare with how it looked in those days. In the late 60's there was an investigation that showed how dangerous the cars were concerning the colour scheme with grey, black, white and grayish versions of blue and green as common colours. That changed the history of paint and we got the orange colours of the early 70's. U.S cars on the other hand were, in the 50's and 60's and within the U.S, quite often painted in two, or even three tone colours, but when exported to Europe they were that expensive almost only diplomats, company executives and county governors could afford one, and they almost without exeption choosed black as colour on their cars, and thus black were considered an exclusive colour for a long time. Almost the only exeption from the executives were the Taxis, but they were usually painted black as well. -- Last edit: 2013-11-25 11:08:56 |

You are correct zodiac, I had another look at the volvoamazonpictures site. I always use that site when identifying Amazon modelyears but a lot of users on here have said that the first year for one tone colors are 1961 which I have never bother to check, sorry 'bout that. I think there are a few Amazons listed as 1961 that should be checked. |
