Looks like a mid to late 1950's American Lafrance O-10 CRFF truck to me. |

This is a 1954 O-11A crash truck. The O-10 was a 2 door cab. The back window was smaller then the front. This has 4 windows almost the same size. The O-11A had 4 doors and 2 foam turrets on the roof. The 1957 O-11B had one BIG foam turret on the roof. My father was on an O-11A for 4 years. I have many photos and USAF Tech Orders for it. |

This is definitely an AMERICAN LaFRANCE O-11A model. The O-10 had a shorter cab, with no rear seating compartment, and a single roof turret. The O-11A was larger, having enough seating in front and rear of the cab to hold five firefighters, including the driver. It had two roof turrets. I was a US Air Foce firefighter from 1972 to 1977. I trained on the O-11A but never saw one again after fire school at any base I was assigned. While I was at Loring AFB, Maine, we did have an O-11B, which had one larger, more powerful (and easier to use) roof turret, but the same basic cab arrangement of the "A" model. The "B" did not have the ladder arrangement as on the "A", but had an "A-frame" ladder in a covered rack on the rear of the vehicle. It was very fast, agile, and quick, usually the first out of the station on an airfield emergency. I was the last firefighter at Loring to drive our O-11B on an emergency, and the last firefighter to drive it, period. On return from an emergency, one day, the transmission would no longer go into reverse, so we had to leave it outside. Its replacement, the Oshkosh P-4 Crash Truck had already arrived, but we used the O-11B while waiting for enough firefighters to be trained to drive and operate it. When that happened, I drove the O-11B to the maintenance garage for its disposal. It was a sad day for me, as my last name is LaFrance! |

To "Fireman5230": how may I get in touch with you? I am trying to find tech orders and other plans to try and scratch-build different USAF crash trucks. You say you have many pictures and the Tech Order for the O-11A. Is there anyway you can share that with me, copy it an dmail or email copies? It would be greatly appreciated!! I am a disabled firefighter, now, and have been in touch with a number of former USAF firefighters. I am building, as of this writing, a model of the HH-43B/F Huskie, which was the helicopter used for local-base rescue, and carried two firefighters and a Fire Suppression Kit. I am making my own plans to scratch-build the fire suprression kits, also. It would be great if you would help me with the O-11A, which isn't a big stretch to building the "B" model. Thank you!! |

Disabld - I have parts to a fwe different TO's. I tried to build an A model but got side tracked my 2 kids being born almost 5 years ago and never got back to it. Send me an Email jb3smith@yahoo.com I will send you the photos I have found on line plus from my father. I have the HH-43 also and saw one in CT at a museum to get some idea if I was on the right track. Talk to you soon. |
