From the title sequence, footage of Eisenhower visiting the UK.

Looks SC1 or SC2; unclear how many doors it has - a normal 2 door convertible or an angle-grinder special on a 4 door??

I'm fairly sure it's a 2 door. Another picture of what I'd guess is the same car (although Eisenhower is wearing something different) Link to "www.friendsreunited.co.uk"

1955 - 1957 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud I Alloy Drop Head Coupé by H.J.Mulliner, quite unlike the later variant which was based on the standard saloon, this was entirely coachbuild.Design 7410

The car shown in G-MANN's link appears to be an H.J.Mulliner two door convertible, the registration USA 1 was an early out of series issue from the County Council of Aberdeen, for use of the Diplomatic Corps, in Sept 1959. Whether the registration matches the car, is a faked one for the film, or is still in diplomatic use is an interesting question I can't answer.

Thanks for that. Eisenhower's visit was in September 1959, so USA1 must have been issued for this. And the car did wear this plate, it's not CGI trickery: Link to "www.allposters.com"

Do I put this as the chassis number?

No, that's the coachbuilder's design reference.

And in spite of it all, no record survives for a car registrered as USA1 (nor for YG1 for Yuri Gagarins trip in the same or a similar car)

USA xxx series issued Aberdeen Apr-June 61, so the footage was 1.5 years too soon for a proper plate; no trace of USA 1 today. YG 1 issued 1933 in Yorkshire - now on a red Merc E230 Elegance (irony alert!).

USA 1 was a proper plate, issued early, out of sequence, by Aberdeen at the request of the Diplomatic Service of the Foreign office. Aberdeenshire also issued 1 RSA presumably for the Republic of South Africa, in March 1992. It may be that the FO keeps details of such plates confidential and so the cars currently carrying them can only be found out by standing in front of the appropriate embassy. There are numerous other such issues, for instance Manchester issued IND 1 in July 1959 and Staffordshire issued 1 RF in Nov 1993.

YG 1 was the property of the well proportioned female singer Yana, whose real name was Pamella Guard, (thanks Google), and was lent by her, I think attached to a Royce, for the use of Mr Gagarin. It made a splash in the newspapers at the time, I recall. My information dates its first issue as March 1932 by the County Council of Yorkshire (West Riding). See the article about Yana in the attachment which also mentions the registration number if you scroll down.
