I grew-up passing this car on the way to school. It was left derelict on a driveway on a main road in Bushey, England, for decades. HZ 5566 - "DAIMLER DE 36 TOURING LIMOUSINE. THIS CAR IS 1 OF 2 HOOPER BODIED TOURING LIMOUSINES EVER PRODUCED. A TOTAL OF AROUND 200 EXAMPLES OF THE DAIMLER DE36s WERE EVER PRODUCED AND FITTED WITH VARIOUS DIFFERENT BODY STYLES. THIS EXAMPLE WAS REGISTERED IN COUNTY TYRONE IN 1952. THESE FINE CARS WERE ALL HAND BUILT AND OFTEN ONLY OWNED BY THE RICH AND FAMOUS. THE DE36s WERE FITTED WITH A WHOPPING 5460cc STRAIGHT EIGHT CYLINDER ENGINE. REPUTEDLY THERE ARE ONLY 88 KNOWN EXAMPLES WHICH HAVE SURVIVED." - http://www.drivearchive.co.uk/vehicledetails.asp?CarID=51394 The silver car in thumbs above is JDU 280 which seems to be the other one of the Hooper pair. Described as 1946 here and is chassis #51212, but is a June-Aug 49 plate. 2 days ago I read about another unusual big Daimler from Northern Ireland - MZ 8074 - described as a 1936 Double Six (although a 1950 Belfast plate), apparently shown on Daimler stand at 1936 Olympia motor show. Has Lancefield Coachworks of London body and interior conversion for invalid ambulance without outward indications of its purpose. Was displayed at 2016 AXA National Classic Car show in Dublin as barnfind. |
