[Typ 14D], according to /vehicles_make-Volkswagen_model-Typ+14D.html ...

[Typ 14] was already used for the Karmann Ghia...

You're welcome :)
It could of course be that wikipedia is correct and Volkswagen used the [Typ 14] for two totally different models - I don't know why we have [Typ 14D] instead, but I guess it makes sence taht they used a different Typ number, indeed.

It seems the code used on various sites for the mk1 Caddy; are there other references than Wikipedia with only 14 for the Caddy?

According the Wikipedia, it listed as [Typ 147] for LHD :??:

Made in YU.

@rljuna2: Wikipedia is not correct, as this is the Typ 147: /vehicles_make-Volkswagen_model-Typ+147.html

 I have to correct myself. There is some relation of "Typ 147" to the Caddy, as I remember a friend, who has a shop for aircooled VW-parts. He told me, that there are some spare-part-numbers of the Caddy, which are starting with 147 (which shows the type in the VW-systematics).
So it's a bit irritating, because 147-numbers were used decades before for the old Typ 147, the "Kleinlieferwagen" with the nickname "Fridolin". O.k., no problem for Volkswagen, as -for sure- nothing is left of the Fridolin since decades, too. You can identify it by the different packaging. The VW-design has changed a bit during the times.

A bit similar it's with K 70-engine-parts. For any inexplicable reason VW has used the 028...-numbers again in the 90ies for a Golf-/Vento-/Sharan-Diesel-engine (the 1.9 liter non-TDI, I think)
