Usually these European UPS-Tansportes are based an the Mercedes T2-chassis.

What should the name be for these trucks?

Until recently, UPS in Britain used Volkswagen Transporters (T4) disguised with custom bodywork (you could see the standard VW steering wheel and dashboard inside if the door was open). I'm pretty sure that this is one of them.

(Now, they use undisguised Mercedes Sprinters. At first they took off the Mercedes star badges, which was pointless because the badge shape is moulded into the grille. All the vans I've seen recently have badges.)

So this is Custom or Made for movie Volkswagen T4?

Custom I suppose. Not made for movie, because it's a real UPS van.

If it is a VW, then lets list it as VW, even if the body was modified.

I managed to get a photo of one of these recently and I checked the plate and it came back a Mercedes.

I think Grumman-Olsen build the bodies for the UPS package cars. I'm interested to discover the logbook for that one is a Mercedes. In the flesh they appear a bit more truck like than a Sprinter - my best guess would have been the larger Vario.

I've read that UPS are very protective of their corporate image and consider the package car an intrinsic part of it, hence they dismantle and scrap the old ones rather than sell them in the public domain. So you are unlikely to ever see this design of van being used by any other company. Shame, as I have a quiet desire to use one for a camper conversion :)

@Gag: why you got the idea with VW? No, this van is not a VW, because of the size of the chassis, the ground clearance, the distance between the wheels on one axle and the discance of the axles front to back, even the wheels aren't VW-like - they are typical for the Mercedes T2.
Yes, there were a few VW-based UPS-vans, but the were smaller and had mostly still the grille and bumper of the T4.

I think UPS in Britain had some Volkswagen vans with disguised fronts, but I'm prepared to be wrong. They definitely also had the version with the original T4 nose.

I know this a long since posted thread but those are Spier P80's built on a Mercedes chassis. I drove one for nearly 10 years and drove this exact truck for about 3 years after it was featured in the movie. Sadly it's now been scrapped.

N459VPJ is a 1996 Mercedes-Benz 711 D [T1] CVS Chassis Cab (whatever that means).
