johnfromstaffs ◊ 2009-12-02 23:16	Rolls-Royce 40/50 "Silver Ghost" 1906 to 1925. The R series of registration numbers started in 1903 and finished in March 1923. This looks like it is a fairly early car, without front wheel brakes or electric lighting, so pre 1919. -- Last edit: 2009-12-02 23:21:25
nzcarnerd ◊ 2009-12-03 07:48	This is an early Ghost - not later than about 1912 - from the flat top bonnet - later ones were sloped forward so that the car did not look as if was sagging in the middle. I found this site http://www.tvacres.com/license_AB.htm which lists known numbers of cars in TV programmes - but no mention of this one so perhaps it is not a regular. -- Last edit: 2009-12-03 07:50:40

Rolls - Royce Silver Ghost 1909 http://www.beaulieu.co.uk/uploads/beaulieu/CarCollection/rolls2.jpg "Termed by many "the best car in the world", the Silver Ghost was first shown at the London Motor Show at Olympia in 1906. This particular car was originally a limousine supplied to Colonel Fergusson of Dundee. It was found in the mid-1950s as a breakdown truck at Berwick-on-Tweed. The vehicle details for R 1910 are: Date of Liability 01 02 2010 Date of First Registration 10 02 1921 Year of Manufacture 1921 Cylinder Capacity (cc) 6283CC Vehicle Colour WHITE The DVLA year of manufacture and registration are unreliable as its common for very early vehicles to be recorded with dates in the early 1920s.
park-ward ◊ 2011-07-16 19:31	It's the Beaulieu car, 1909 Silver Ghost chassis #60939. Replica body by L.F. Willis and it is cream, not silver and not 1921 as in the DVLA web site (who can we trust ? ;o)

DVLA now uses - I hope - the best info it can find on this early chaos, but the accuracy of pre-1923 numbers will always need careful scrutiny before being accepted.
