Wartburg 311 Camping or 1000 Camping (both [311-5])

The insert trim for the second color looks the older layout with sharp angles in the front :later cars had a second color insert trim with round curves layout in the front.I'd go for a 1959/60 Wartburg 311/5 Camping Limousine 900 cc.The 992 cc engine was introduced in 1962.

As far as I could find out, the earlier Camping Limousine had its contrasting colour (with indeed a sharp edge) only on the doors and the rear fender. Most pictuers of the Camping Limousine I can find have the paint scheme as shown here, but with rounder lines. I wonder if this might be a restored car, using easier (and more modern?) chrome strips. Also the rear side window looks strange, with its horizontal division...

This 3rd side window is original, they had it later, but since when, I don't know, seems after the 1962 (well original part, but can be not original in the car). Perhaps the reasons to replace the one piece glass were the production costs.

Edit: Exact name on German market was "Camping-Limousine".

Yes, two-piece third window is also visible here: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datei:Wartburg_312.jpg

Don't look on and trust the originality of any cars, which were running in the GDR.
Quite often worn out cars from GDR-production were built up completely with new frames, chassis and complete bodies. Due the Trabants and Wartburgs had the old-style-chassis-platforms (based on the DKW of the 40ies), these complete rebuildings were technically easy to make.

It is true and it can complicate our life a lot. In one of our classic cars magazines was article of the German Wartburg expert, he said that some body details to the 311 were not possible to find in the GDR already in the 80's. The cars has been also usually repainted by their owners.
