An very early 1962 model with the 225 badge under the consul name on the bonnet. this badge was never fitted to production cars.

Possibly a bit of witchcraft with this plate, which does not appear on check sites but Glass's say was issued April-July 59 therefore could not match any Cortina. Photo looks modern not period so the car may well still exist. Had not spotted the 225 badge, but agree this means a pre-production car probably from summer 62 before the launch in September.

I believe the car was to be called a consul 225 ,and the cortina name was only decided upon a few months before its official launch. Another late change was the adoption of the now famous rear lights. This photo is from a period ford film and shows the 'new consul cortina' under going various road tests before its official launch. the film also shows a blue car on test and some factory scenes of the cortina production line.

Yes - 1.2 was going to be 225 and 1.5 to 255, backing up the Classic as 315, Classic Capri as 335 and the Consul itself as 375, creating Consul as a sub-brand with just numbers to describe the models. Abandoned for UK but partially used in Europe where Classic and Capri names were dropped and 315/335/375 badging used.
