Allegro, Maestro, what's next? Why do they have to use old rare British Leyland (Austin Rover in this case) cars for the stunts? And, this has to be one of the last MG Maestros ever made, because production of the MG Maestro stopped in 1991. And, (luckily) this is not a Turbo, so a MG Maestro 2.0 EFi

Next it'll be a Montego, which would be such a loss....... NOT! :p

They chose these cars because they are old and not worth very much, they aren't going to wreck a brand new car are they? What do you suggest they wreck instead of these British "classics"?

Any other 80's-90's cars that aren't so rare and sold worldwide, instead of this rarities just sold in Britain. I have to remind you this:

Top 10 vanishing cars:- (DVLA) number of
---MAKE----MODEL-------YEAR--------SOLD-----cars still registered
1- Morris...Marina.....(1971-80)....807,000.....745 - Destroyed by Jeremy Clarkson
2- Ford..Cortina MK.IV/V(1976-82)..1,065,682...2,010
3- Renault 18..........(1979-86)....131,241.....317
4- Renault 5 MK.I......(1972-83)....216,199.....499
5- Skoda Estelle.......(1977-92)....102,105.....612
6- Vauxhall Cavalier mk.II(81-89)...807,624....6,343
7- Austin/Rover Metro..(1980-94)..1,370,000...21,468 - Destroyed by Jeremy Clarkson (twice) and Top Gear
8- Austin/Rover Montego(1984-95)....436,000....8,988 - Destroyed by Jeremy Clarkson
9- Austin/Rover Maestro(1983-95)....440,000...11,574 - Destroyed (here) by Top Gear
10- Fiat Uno mk.I......(1983-89)....190,000....5,179

See what I mean? All the British Leyland - Austin Rover products featured in this list have been destroyed by Clarkson or Top Gear. I know they were bad cars, but some people like them, like me, and they aren't the only bad cars in the world, and they also aren't the only cheap, used cars in the market. For the next stunt, maybe a more common car wouldn't be such a loss

From Austin Rover Online:
The Maestro was an ex MGOC racer, but, it was shed, apparently. It was on ebay last year.

info[/b] taken from
Link to "www.independent.co.uk"

"Micras of the original K10 codename variety are rather like that. They have been omnipresent in Britain's roadscape for almost a quarter of a century. You may never have noticed it but their survival rate, unlike many so-called classics, is extraordinary. Keep looking, anywhere, and it won't be long before one ambles past, possibly with dull paintwork and faded plastic trim, but still in rude functional health.

However, the evidence for their longevity is more than just anecdotal. Official DVLA registration statistics reveal that 96,421 Micra K10s are on our roads, out of a UK sales total of 343,411 between 1983 and 1992. So 28 per cent - more than a quarter - of all K10s sold here are still in use.

On its own, that may not seem impressive. But contrast it with the Micra's peers, and it's a survivor of cockroach toughness.

Of the Austin/Rover Metro, with 1,370,000 sold between 1980 and 1994, 21,468 are still on the go - that's 1.6 per cent. Of the Ford Fiesta Mk1 and 2, with 1,292,669 sold between 1976 and 1989, 43,878 are still in use - 3.3 per cent. Of the first-generation Fiat Uno, 190,000 were sold between 1983 and 1989, and 5,179 of them are still standing - 2.7 per cent."

How did you find the number of cars still registered? Can you find that out for any car?

Even though there are probably plenty of clapped-out old cars that are easier to find, I think Clarkson and co chose to destroy old BL cars to show their contempt for them.
