1999-2002 model 1999, 2000 and some 2001 model had the center differential lock, but Land-Rover deliberately removed the shift linkage needed to lock it. Thus the center differential operated permanently in "open" (unlocked) form. Unfortunately, that meant if one or more drive-wheels lost traction the center torque distribution could be easily disturbed. 4-wheel electronic traction control was introduced to help correct the said issue, but was no substitute for being able to lock the torque distribution. 2002-2003 models saw the neutered locking mechanism completely removed, leaving just the open center differential. |
