The 35/120 was developed from the 30- really the same engine but with steel sleeves, raised compression, alloy pistons and full pressure lubrication. The 30 was introduced in 1912 and the 35/120 deleted after 1932- 20 years later, making this the longest lived of all Daimler sleeve valve engines (at least in basic construction). This car is curious because the radiator surround seems to be finished in brass and it should be nickle- but perhaps that is just a trick of the light conditions. The 5.7liter 35/120 cost £1,200 as a chassis, whilst the new double six 50 chassis (a 7.2 liter V12) cost a whopping £1,950. The two models could carry similar size coachwork, so I guess that explains why the 35 remained popular for so long! |
