I think this is the 5-ton version of the M-35 (i forgot the M designation). The M-35 was the 2.5ton. |

It is either one of the M-39 (G-744) Series of 5-ton trucks first introduced in 1951 and built by International, Diamond T and Mack, from 1953 on in larger numbers by International and Kaiser Jeep, or it is a M-809 Series version built by AM General from 1970 until the introduction of the M-939 Series in 1983. I don't know which Series this truck belongs to, nor can I tell at the moment what the correct 'M' number is. But as far as I know 'M-251' does not exist. Buc84 is the only one using this number, but he gave no reference. I am not sure if it is possible to keep the M-39 and M-809 Series apart. I am still looking for a good reference on the subject. |

Thanks for correcting me(Really?),I guess I had myself a brain fart? (Everyone just called these a "Deuce & a Half" or a "6x6"? Might be where I got the "251" number from?)Anyway,the M-35 came out in the mid 1950's and was followed by M-923 in the mid 1980's.There are minor changes thru the run of the M-35 series,such as grilles,placement of lights,and especially the powertrains,dependent on the mfgr."www.olive-drab.com" is a very good place to look this over.(And a good place to refresh one's apparently failing memory?? This is a 1970's M-813A2 series 5 ton produced by Am General. The 1960s models had passenger fender mounted air cleaners and were classified as M54A2 series. These trucks ran a 465ci continental multifuel turbo diesel motor like the M35A2 series until the 1970's when the cummins big cam and caterpiller were introduced to the military. |

Thanks for the information on the position of the air cleaners ... quite obvious, if you know what to look for. The M-813 would be the standard LWB cargo truck and would thus be equipped with a soft-top but no loading crane. I don't know of a special number assigned to one with a loading crane, therefore it probably is an M-809, which is not only the number for the series, but also for the LWB chassis on which task specific equipment could be mounted. |
