W124 before it was called "E-class" until about 1990. I assume that the funeral coach conversion has been carried out by Coleman Milne. In case I find out something different, I´ll let you know.

The base vehicle can impossibly be made in 1996. The front (grille, hood, bumper) looks like it was built until about 08/1990 BEFORE Mercedes Benz provided a facelift and renamed the whole series "E-class"... My former daily driver looked exactly the same and was also made before the facelift. So it´s rather an 300 D than an E 300 D. Could it be the year of manufacture refers to the conversion by CM? :??:

From your comments Animatronixx, I would say there are two vehicles. The one pictured followed by the registration being transferred to the newer 1996 model. This type of registration, without a year identifier, is commonly used by funeral companies so the age of the fleet of vehicles is not easily seen. 'WFS' will probably be "W(-something) Funeral Services".

What would be correct over here, made in Germany or made in GB?

@Ani, without having seen a VIN i still suspect this is based on a sedan W124 - there was no F124 300 D
