But many of the earlier electronic injection systems, where only the fuel flow was controlled - ignition had its own control system - also had a control lamp. But this one could rather be the 'idiot light' meaning there is some other trouble with the engine, since it had - I think - the Bosch K-Jetronic system.

Therefore, if Penny were driving a 1991-1993 Cabriolet, the running "check engine light" joke would bear some truth. Only 1991-1993 Cabriolets initially sold in California have a check engine light; all other 1979-1993 Cabriolets do NOT have a check engine light. I cannot find the exact datas, but I think, a Cabrio it allowed to tow 1400 kg, the Golf/Rabbit only 1000 kg.
