Don't you just love it when people with no idea about cars freak out when a dash light turns on?

At one point Sheldon says it weighs 4,400 pounds.

There's no way in hell a Type 17 weighs more than 2,000 pounds.

"Did you again ignore the 'Check Engine' light?"

"No, Mr. Smarty Pants. I ignored the 'Fill Gas Tank' light."

Were Volkswagens even equipped with MILs in 1985?

Didn't think they had them until OBD-1 was introduced.

I wondered if it even had a 'Check Engine' light.

OBD was AFAIK required by law MY1988. But many of the earlier electronic injection systems, where only the fuel flow was controlled - ignition had its own control system - also had a control lamp.

But this one could rather be the 'idiot light' meaning there is some other trouble with the engine, since it had - I think - the Bosch K-Jetronic system.

Don't all cars have one?
In mine the few time it lighted on I just had to turn off the engine and turn it on again :D

As a general rule, carbureted vehicles don't have one and electronic fuel-injected vehicles do.

I think they don't have one, unless you want to count the battery, coolant, oil, or oxygen sensor warning lights. Nowadays some modern cars might roll those all into one generic "check engine" light :p

Indeed I was thinking to newer cars (i.e. at least 10-15 years)

It is an '86-'87 Tornado Red base model Cabriolet. No Tornado Red for 1985MY.

A) It's not even a Type 17; all Golf I/Rabbit Cabriolets are Type 155.
B) Cabriolets weight approx. 2200-2400 pounds (depends on year and options).

tore-40 wrote OBD was AFAIK required by law MY1988.

OBD was required on vehicles initially sold in California for 1991 and newer models. Therefore, if Penny were driving a 1991-1993 Cabriolet, the running "check engine light" joke would bear some truth. Only 1991-1993 Cabriolets initially sold in California have a check engine light; all other 1979-1993 Cabriolets do NOT have a check engine light. OBD was required by USA federal law beginning with 1996 and newer models.

Which causes, that the Cabriolet has a higher tow capacity than the regular Golf I/Rabbit. I cannot find the exact datas, but I think, a Cabrio it allowed to tow 1400 kg, the Golf/Rabbit only 1000 kg.

Penny was funny when she was angry with Sheldon & Leonard, for cleaning her apartment while she was sleeping: "SON OF A BITCH! YOU SICK GEEKY BASTARDS!"

Leonard: "Penny's up".

Penny:(To Sheldon)"AND WHAT KIND OF DOCTOR REMOVES SHOES FROM ASSES?!"

Sheldon: "Depending on the depth, that's either a Proctologist or a General Surgeon."
