You missed our discussion  /vehicle_89434-Vickers-Armstrong-Centurion.html I don't know for sure, the only way to find out would be to find out whether they used the real deal or not from another source. If the movie has support from the Department of Defense, then it most likely is an authentic M1 Abrams. If not, then it's most likely one of the Centurion tanks. |

I would be more inclined to believe its a Centurion dressed up as an Abrams, seeing as how there is no indication the Defense Department lent any support (If that were true, the Huey at the end of the trailer would probably be a Blackhawk). |

Well the main characters theirselves have nothing to do with the tank, but well, i supose it could get two because its used in several shots if i remember well. |

It is definitely one of those dressed-up Centurion tanks. For those who are curious, this is the largest military vehicle rental company to the film industry: http://www.armytrucks.com They are the people who own, operate, and rent out those visually modified Centurions to Hollywood. If you go to their site, you will see that "Cloverfield" is listed in their filmography. So are "Jarhead", "Hulk", "Stop-Loss", "Jericho", and all of the other movies that feature M1 Abrams tanks. You can also see pictures of their inventory, and the fake Abrams tanks listed in the "Tanks & Armored Vehicles" section. It looks like they have three of them, judging by the photos. As best I know, "War of the Worlds" is the only Hollywood movie to feature authentic M1 Abrams. Any other film you see, uses the Centurions. |

The image of the M1 Abrams from Cloverfield is definitely a fake Centurion, whereas the second picture posted by Neptune is authentic. The number one way to tell if the M1 Abrams in a movie is authentic or a Centurion mock up is by counting the number of wheels on one track. A real M1 Abrams has seven wheels, with a distinguishable gap between the first and second wheel. A Centurion mock up, however, will only have six evenly spaced wheels. Based on this, the M1 in Cloverfield, Iron Man, and The Day the Earth Stood Still are clearly fakes. Apparently the M1s in Red Dawn, Courage Under Fire, and Jarhead were also fakes, though the M1 in Red Dawn was way to far to determine for sure, and it has been a very long time since I've seen the opening battle from Courage Under Fire. What really angers me about The Day the Earth Stood Still was the fact that the massive scene with M1 Abrams and M2 Bradleys was clearly CGI work, yet they couldn't animate the M1 correctly. Apparently, the M1 Abrams in War of the Worlds was real, though others are going to have to or already have confirmed that for me. And after seeing the Super Bowl trailer for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, it would appear that Michael Bay actually got a real M1A2 Abrams for the movie. I judged this by seeing the gap between the first and second wheel on the scene with the tank. Finally, another way of determining an authentic M1 Abrams and a Centurion mock up is by looking at the supposed coaxial 7.62 machine gun next to the 120mm Smoothbore. On the mock up, you will notice two holes, with the barrel underneath and to the right of the main cannon whereas a real M1 Abrams, the coaxial is actually just to the right of and if anything, slightly above the main cannon. According to the IMDB trivia page for Courage Under Fire: http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0115956/trivia I also remember reading at the time that Abrams were specially made for the film using former Australian army Centurions. Courage Under Fire was made in 1996, and I would imagind that the Centurion-based Abrams that have appeared in other films since then are the same ones. Quite ironically, I saw in a Japanese website that the Abrams from Red Dawn is based on a T-72, BUT THE FILM HAS FAKE T-72'S. |

If you don't believe me, just look closely at the forward tracks. You can just about see a seventh wheel. |
