Great, a right hand drive 1963 Opel Kadett [A].  So I wasn't imagining that they existed.  Any idea where and in what countries they were originally sold? Was either Sweden or Norway right hand drive at that time? I know the UK company I worked for had one for two years sometime before 1966. But in Sweden they were importing and selling left-hand drive vehicles for some time before the changeover, surely? I'm wondering rather whether this one was assembled locally in South Africa. Sunbar's example must have been a one-off as the Kadett A wasn't officially imported into the UK. (Might have been in Ireland, though?) |

Yes, the countries in Southern Africa (South Africa, Nambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana) have left-side-traffic. I don't know, how it's in Angola and Mocambique. The countries, which were former British colonies, have the traffic on the left By the way: ther must be some borders in Africa, where the traffic has to change the side of the road. The francophone countries have right-side-traffic. |

Due to the proximity with the former British colonies, traffic in Mozambique also rides on the left. In Angola traffic rides on the right side. |

Wikipedia says that at some borders traffic lights are used to stop vehicles while traffic from the other side is going through the changeover point, like when a road is reduced to one lane because of roadworks. Link to "en.wikipedia.org" If the traffic is very light, a few signs reminding people to change over would be enough. |

The South African registration would have begun PSL, not P5L. OLIV3R is not a possible UK registration number. |

The plate on the car now is whats known as a show plate. Not sure whether he has actually registered it in this country, though. |

That type of Kadett was actually produced 1962-1965 1000cc 40bhp later with 48 bhp! My dad had one model 1964 48bhp left hand drive(offcourse I'm from sweden)Greyish blue.He had it from 71-73 Sadly the engine broke down after a couple of months but after a engine rebuild it was fine! It was the first car I ever "drove"! About 200 yards o a dirtroad in Dalarna in Sweden! Only in first gear though I was like 15 years old! With my dad at my side I didn't nick it!Iv'e had a couple of 66 Opel Rekord my self One with actually automatic gearbox and a beautiful white Coupe! |

I thought they bought the cars in Britain before going to Botswana, rather than buying them locally. Jeremy's Lancia Beta coupé was RHD as well, while May's Mercedes was LHD. |

The Kadett [A] was never officially sold in the UK; sales started with the Kadett [B]. I'm not sure about Ireland. |
