About 50,000 Tomcats built according to Honest John (1.6, 1.8, 2.0T), not many left.

Yes, but a few versions - 216 Coupé, 220 Coupé and 220 Coupé Turbo ("The Rover 200 so dangerous that production was cancelled" - note their main picture is a 220GTi 3door, not a proper Coupé) and finally just as the 1996+ Rover Coupé.

I don't think this one has a rear spoiler so probably 216, which is the only version I can find listed with 7-spoke alloys (220 and plain Coupé had 6-spoke, 220 Turbo and plain Coupé SE had 5-spoke. Monotone colours were Dec 94 onwards.

The wheels have 6 spokes (they're clearer if you zoom). I also think there is a spoiler, look at each side of the boot.

220 Coupe had seven spoke wheels, Turbo Coupe had six spoke ones, VVC had five spoke ones. 216/1.6 seemed to come with pretty much all of the possibilities plus steel wheels with plastic covers. This can be verified through brochures and looking at real samples on Google images (only one I'm not sure are original on 1.6s are the 5 spoke VVC wheels, but that's not really relevant here).

Six spoke wheels and spoiler = Turbo or (most likely) late 1.6 Coupe.

I think the dangerous angle is a bit exaggerated, the gearboxes were like a hand grenade with no pin though.

That's a pity. Glass's is fairly clear about which wheels for which models, but if it doesn't work, it doesn't work.

R8 family was a seriously good car - I had lots of the ordinary 214s and 216s as lease and rentals during early 90s and really liked them. Well designed on a Honda base, cheerful and fun to drive - would like to drive one again now 25 years on to see if they're still as good as I remember.

One of the great What-Ifs of British car history - what would have happened if Honda had been allowed to merge with/buy out Rover in late 1980s as they wanted to do, instead of the politically forced sale to an unwilling British Aerospace?? Would Rover still be a proud British brand today??

design on a Honda base.. that's why i had that 2nd gen Integra feeling.. :)

those are sadly questions that only a parralel universe could answer..

Probably would have as much of a positive impact on Honda's now ailing European business too.
