What else can you tell us about the car and set? A lot! The first thing I remember is the initial dialogue between the director and me shortly after my arrival on set. Director: Hello! Wow, you just brought us a fantastic car in absolutely wonderful condition. Me: If it actually was in such a wonderful condition, it wouldn't be here on a film set! This was the beauty we used: A 1958 Convertible in pink with loads of gold-plated goodies, pink & white vinyl interior and a white convertible top. That car was often used for movies, tv shows, weddings and other events because of its "commercial" appearance: Shining pink, lots of chrome, big tailfins - all you need! It has also seen countless Elvis and Marilyn impersonators over the years, as you can probably imagine. The filming for "Alles Atze" took place in Hürth, probably in summer 1999 or 2000 (I remember that the convertible top had been open all day) and it was an 18 hour shift. All we filmed was the intro (overall 23 or 27 seconds?) for the show and the Cadillac never appeared anywhere else in the entire series. The indoor set was made mostly from plywood and is the actual "street" that was used throughout the show, with the lead character's kiosk being on camera left. "Atze", the main character (unbeknownst to me at that time), is actually very kind and down-to-earth. He sort of took me by the hand and showed me the entire set and I thought that was a really nice thing to do, particularly as this was "his" show and I was just a random driver of a prop car to be used. In hindsight, I wasn't very fond of the role he played, but I really liked him for the person he is. The main cast was all present, and pretty much everyone else was asked to join the cheering crowd surrounding the Cadillac. I was kindly offered to join the crowd as well, but preferred to stay backstage (which was a wise decision! ). The crowd consisted of more than 100 extras plus the entire Pyromaniacs "Düsseldorf Rhein Fire" cheerleader team. 11 (yes, eleven!) kg of tinfoil confetti raining from the ceiling were spent that day, as we did about 40 takes of the opening scene - that means hours and hours of repeating, getting the car and all the people back in position, sweeping away confetti, refreshing the cast's make-up, getting cameras/ lights/ sounds/ special effects ready etc. Norbert Heisterkamp (by the way a trained stuntman, as he told me) is seen driving the car and each time the scene was filmed, it was my job to return the Cadillac to the starting position for the next take, over and over again. I was actually waiting for the Cadillac's starter to explode at some point, because they kept starting and stopping the engine all the time. But the Caddy was brave and never let us down until the filming was wrapped up. The best scene was never filmed: It was me taking the Cadillac back home that night - an obviously tired dude, riding a glossy pink convertible, spreading incredible amounts of fancy tinfoil confetti all across the autobahn. Everyone else around must have believed Arielle the mermaid was taking a ride in a fancy Cadillac on the federal motorway! The car stayed with us for a long time and years later, I still found the occasional piece of tinfoil hiding behind the trim, deep down in the glovebox or somewhere else in the car.
