See the special rear bumper. It seems they did not want to ruin the Merc!

Here you can see that this was only done for the crash shot.

Probably Hitchcock wanted it for himself. He no longer wanted to go by bus! :p

I think you have to watch the film again, Wickey!

 ok, couple of scenes.. my idea of 4 stars vehicle is that it is used a lot during the whole movie :) but ok, if you insist..

The definition for four stars is: 'Vehicle used a lot by a main character or that has an important role'. And this car (as well as the expolding truck) are important for the plot of the film and the main character. Therefore four stars are fully justified.

I seriously doubt above stated importance of the exploding truck, it had very little impact on the following events. On the other hand, the importance of the Mercedes convertible for the following events is considerable.
My rating: Mercedes ***, White-Freightliner **.

Well that's my bad English translation :D What I wanted to mean by "important" is that it is seen a lot. Like a major character: you see it a lot in the movie, or at least a lot in a long major scene.
Even if for the plot the car is important, if it is seen only few times or only in a short scene, I do not think that it should get 4 stars.

Even with the custom bumper, wouldn't the force of the impact still go beyond the custom bumper and reach the sheetmetal and damage it?

Thats why the Ford Custom had a soft aluminum bumper equipped so it would crumple up easier. This was actually done by custom by George Barris Link to "en.wikipedia.org"

Is it me or does there seem to be some kind of structure under the Mercedes' trunk pointing down in a 45°angle from the bumper ? Looks as if they might have had constructed something like a buffer-stop that was bolted to the ground, tacked the Mercedes' bumper to it and parked the Mercedes itself as close as possible on the safe side of the stop. Thus, the Ford would actually never have hit the Mercedes, but just a well hidden buffer. I also do not remember the Mercedes jerking forward an inch when the Ford hit her, or did it ?

 Yes, it seems indeed so. The bumper is definetely not in its original position. And I cannot remember any damages at the Benz either in the scene.

I heard (but can't confirm) that George Barris got his first work for a movie here by making special "soft" alloy front fenders for the police car to maximize a comedian effect and minimize damage on the Mercedes.

I have read the same story about Barris.
