This grill design WAS only made from 89-91. 1988 models used the older stacked headlights like 1985-1987 trucks did. In 1988 the new pickups came out with their grille but GM didn't update the old body styles until 1989. I have a 1988 Sierra Classic Suburban, haha. It's a common misconception.

What are they carrying in the trailer.

Basically just more storm chasing equipment; "DOT-3," a similar device to the main team's "Dorothy" used to track the tornado systems.

They probably stored other "D.O.T.'s" in the trailer. True, I don't remember any scenes depicting the interior of this trailer.

umm... Noo? If dey had a DOT 3 in da bak of da Suburban it wud hav been more difficult 4 dem 2 take DOT 3 out of da bak of da truck wen da time of interceptin da tornado came cuz da trailer wud had been blockin their way. Common sense, ain' it?! In ma opinion i'd say dey had DOT 3 in da trailer. Not in da bak of da Suburban.

This truck says ALPHA-MALE all over it Baby!!! GGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!! As Tim Allen says!!!!!
With either a fuel injected 454 Big Block or DURAMAX Diesel as well as a good set of headers and a revised intake manifold, I'm pretty sure one of these babies can very easily pull a 23 to 26 foot Sea-Ray cabin cruiser.

This was when trucks were built like TANKS.

1989-1991 Chevrolet Suburban Silverado (V-2500)

Has InstaTrac four-wheel drive with two-speed dual range transfer gearbox and permanent 50/50 torque distribution in Four High and Four Low modes.

The dual rear wheels are a custom addition, using the original GM equipment fender extensions from a 30 Series dully pickup. No Suburban utility left the factory like that. A off road light bar, running boards, and utility bumper with integrated fog lamps and winch (of unknown make and capacity) are also added.

May have rear-wheel anti-lock braking system (ABS) which was added for the 1990 model year. It is automatically disabled when the four-wheel drive system is put into Four High or Four Low mode.

It could have any of the three engines available for that time:

5.7 liter 16-valve pushrod 350 small-block V-8 (TBFI)

7.4 liter 16-valve pushrod 454 big-block V-8 (TBFI)

6.2 liter 379 J-Series Detroit Diesel V-8

Firstly, you don’t have to quote my entire post to respond or ask a question. No harm done, just some friendly advice.

The wheels appear to be aftermarket. So there is no way for me to know what make and model they are. If you obtain a screen capture of the Suburban sitting still in the movie, maybe you can make out what design they have. I assume they are similar to the aftermarket modular wheels with port-hole designs.

As for the tires, most rounded-lines that left the factory from 1985’ish-1991, particularly the K-Series versions had General Tire "General Grabber" all-season tires.

Whether or not this Suburban had those tires during the filming of this movie is unknown. They appear to be factory sized, but like the wheels, they too, are more than likely aftermarket.

The General Tire Company was purchased in 1987 by the Germany based Continental AG tire corporation. Continental AG still runs General Tire as it's American tire division and Continental AG/General Tire still makes the "Grabber" all-season tire with various tread designs depending on the application. Moreover the Grabber all-season tires still appear very much as they did in the late ‘80s, with similar side-wall and tread designs.

What does "V2500" or "R1500" stands for(sorry if I'm bothering you by questioning you so much).

And do you know how much it would cost to convert a 1989-1991 Suburban to a Dually?

-- Last edit: 2012-05-19 21:36:52

Nightrider RU

2012-05-19 21:52

For 1987, GM changed the C/K nomenclature to R/V. This was done in preparation for the next generation GMT400 trucks, which were produced concurrently with the older line.

Neptune US

2012-05-20 23:01

From 1973-1986 the letters "C" or "K" indicated which powertrain and drive system the rounded-line pickups and utilities had. A "C" denoted rear-wheel drive, with "K" denoting all-wheel drive.

As Nightrider stated, for the 1987 model year, the C and K letters became "R" and "V", to help distinguish the old rounded-line pickups from the new aero generation pickups which were being built and sold along side each other for a short time. The Blazer and Suburban kept the R and V letters after 1987 up to 1991.

The numbers, "10", "20", or "30", which came after the letters indicated which series or class the vehicle was, each with a progressively higher payload rating.

10 for half-ton class, 20 for three quarter-ton class, and 30 for one-ton class. For 1988, the numbers 10, 20, and 30, became "1500", "2500", and "3500"...

This Suburban is a "V-2500" which means it’s a all-wheel drive three quarter-ton.

twister US

2012-07-04 17:35

Long story short it was bought through craigslist from a guy who worked on the set whose name is on the movie credits, he got it and the trailer after the movie, he said he sold the trailer to planet hollywood and kept the suburban where it was in California until he moved here to Oklahoma, the truck was in a state of decline when I got it do to the fact it sat outside for many years and was not used much, it has since been brought back the way it was in the movie other than I had to change the rear bumper do to damage and I left the antenna's off the roof for now, I took it to the original owners home after the restore and he gave me the prop oklahoma licence plate that was on it in the movie and his wife gave me a twister jacket that only the people on the set got, they were real nice people, the truck still has the camera mounts mounted under the running boards, I down loaded pictures but not sure where they went so far will post if I figure it out, I have several pictures.

It has a stock 350 tbi motor with a turbo 400 auto & 3.73 rear axle gear, it has a dually conversion kit wheels & fenders not sure of cost or if still available, it also has a warn winch front bumper with a 10K lb winch, it also has two pop out sun roofs I was told could be used for a camera man.
