Is "Clipper" a UK-spec special edition? |

Just a normal trim level. Think it was our name for the basic model? |

Glass's says Clipper was limited edition with sports seats and tweed trim based on CTi launched Apr 87. then in Feb 88 became full production line (with "rubber-faced bumpers and black wheel arches"). Discontinued July 92, revived Jan 93, finally stopped Jan 94. Cti continued alongside, with later renaming to GTi and lots of other editions spun off. Wiki says "In an attempt by Volkswagen to keep the car's styling current, all Cabriolets from 1988 on were fitted with a "Clipper" kit out of the factory, featuring smooth body-coloured bumpers, wheelarch extensions, and side skirts." Our usual source for European special editions does not have any Clipper entry, but is not a complete listing. So until we find non-UK Clipper references, it seems Made-for-UK would fit. And the date here means it was one of the first batch limited editions before consolidated production. |
