According to this site: - http://www.simoncars.co.uk/fordcv/fordcv.html "'Fordson' was used on Ford's Tractors, and from 1936 on its British-built vans commencing with the Ford Model Y-based 5cwt Van. From 1952 Fordson Vans were rechristened 'Thames' and kept this name until 'Ford' badges took over again in 1965." So, if the above is correct, this van is either a Fordson 5-cwt or a Thames 5-cwt, but not both. What about any other post 1952 light commercial vehicles from Dagenham? |

I've got a book reference for Fordson => Thames being 1953 for E83W at least. At the moment this seems to be our only colony of [E494C] - none as Fordson 5-cwt or Thames 5-cwt. You're probably right that we have not got this right, but am not sure how we change to correct it across the E494C and more widely. We need a Big Think to decide and then to apply consistently across all relevant Dagenham commercials. The plate on this one was an "allocated in blocks" series, so difficult to place between 51 or 52. |

The badging of light vans compared with the trucks appears to be quite distinctly different from 'Commercial Motor archive' adverts... Fordson or Thames (but not both) for vans Fordson, Fordson Thames then Thames for trucks The 'Fordson' name in advertising was emphasised for vans whereas the 'Thames' name was emphasised for trucks even when used in conjunction with the Fordson Thames brand. In the case of trucks between May 1950 and June 1950 the Fordson name was dropped from Thames Trucks advertising. The vans may well have continued through to 1951. |

simoncars.co.uk "From 1952 Fordson vans were rechristened 'Thames' and kept this name until 'Ford' took over again in 1965". So, MLC 827 of 1951/52 should be listed as a 'Fordson'. My own E494C, sold for restoration around 1974, was certainly a Fordson. |

New info - the name change on E494C at least was September 1952, and was shown on radiator badge. So agree this should be a Fordson. |
