I noticed having a license plate that is a barcode is kind of a cliche for films like this, taking place in a dystopian future. (See: Robocop, A Scanner Darkly, Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man, etc..) |

IIRC there's a particular reason for it in The Handmaid's Tale -- all writing has been eliminated from public spaces, because the regime wants to control women by denying them education.
