An Italian-Soviet co-production about the Afghan war starring Michele Placido of the La Piovra miniseries as Major Bandura. The movie was filmed in Tajikistan, shortly before that country descended into civil war.

If this was filmed entirely in Tajikistan (the Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic, as it was at the time), they must have gone out of their way to source non-Soviet vehicles to reflect the Afghan setting.

Well, Afghanistan was also a communist satellite state of sorts, so it wouldn't have mattered if they chose Soviet cars.

By the way, the film was produced in 1991 and released in April 1992:

Filming began in the winter of 1990, and also took place in Crimea and Syria. Because of the unrest in Dushanbe in February 1990, filming was moved from there to Tashkent.
