What was the name of that ship? |
◊ 2012-02-26 16:58 |
No idea, I think it was not visible. |

Looks like 50's era liner... |

Rather newer. Can anyone identify the shipping company by the colour sheme? |
◊ 2012-02-26 20:11 |
I checked this once again. Nothing about the ship visible above. For the close (and this way perhaps also interior) shots was used French ship named "Corse", but it is different one. |

So far its closest...well, what other countries had such liners? |
◊ 2012-02-26 20:45 |
A lot. I still suggest to check the colour sheme, especially of the funnel, to identify the company. |

Oh, yes: Link to "einestages.spiegel.de" The most known was the "Arkona: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MS_Saga_Pearl_II The first was the "Fritz Heckert" http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/MS_Fritz_Heckert (later used as a hotel-ship in the Gulf Emirates, named "Gulf Fantasy" Followed by the "Völkerfreundschaft", more known as the "Stockholm", which has scuttled the "Andrea Doria": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MS_Athena |

The problem for the DDR was, that their citizen had only very restricted possibilities to travel abroad. In fact only to the COMECON countries. So cruises were only possible over the Baltic Sea. They tried to make cruises over the Black Sea to Bulgaria and Romania, but the problem was, that no stops and shore leaves at any other country before Bulgaria were allowed for the passengers. And by crossing the Bosporus some people jumped overboard and escaped. The only possible tropical Overseas destination was Cuba. A trip to Cuba was indeed the biggest -and usually impossible dream- for many of the always caged DDR-citizens. To earn Western currency the DDR has chartered the "MS Arkona" to a West German company - but then only for Western tourists, stictly without DDR-passengers. -- Last edit: 2012-02-26 21:12:16 |
